SHORT HISTORY
The University of Hawaii has operated a number of stations in thfC Pacific, as evidenced by stations HDY, WKE, and (PON).
In addition to these stations, it also operates stations on Marclls Island, a Japanese territory, and on Easter Island, run
jll ("onjunctjon with the University of Chile.
(PON) was an unusual station in that it was situaterl on a high volcanic island with numerous basaltIC outcrops. ine
magnification of the system was higher than that of any of the coral atolls, and its operation was considered very useful.
WKE was installed by the U.S. Navy, equipped with a Wilson-Lamison and a short-period Benioff, and transferred to
the University on October 14, 1965.
