young trainees during four months of monsoon
period.

commissioned in May, 1990.
Shivsagar Dam (400 Million Gallon
Capacity). The dam was commissioned In May, 1990
to replace the old dam set up by the Britishers in 1945.
The new dam which has a capacity of 400 million
gallons as against the old dam with a capacity of mere
105 million gallons has proved an invaluable asset for
the establishment. This has met the growing demands
of the ever increasing population of the trainees and
staff with their families. Besides, it has changed the
entire life style of the establishment due to the
following :
• Water routine abolished. (The
establishment was near to shutting down in
1987 due to low waterlevel in the dam).
• Water was made available for gardening
which improved the entire greenery of the
campus.
• Swimming pool available throughout the
year.
• Improved personnel hygiene (Lower rate
of sick parade)
• Boat pulling and sailing made available.
CONCLUSION
The seeds of “Training” sown by the Britisher on
the soil of Sahyadris has reaped a rich harvest of
budding Marine Engineers and Artificers. The campus
has graduated from steam to diesel and then to gas
and may be “nuclear” too in days to come. The
establishment has done its utmost to keep abreast with
the acquisition/induction of the new breed of ships
from time to time.
Many C.O.’s privileged to command this unique
establishment have sacrificed their personal life for the
well being of the establishment only with the sole aim
of having a competent and efficient navy. I wonder
when the platinum jubilee of INS Shivaji is due in Feb
2020, how many of the C.O.’s would be able to make
it ? Time will tell. As for me, I am quite satisfied having
already participated in the Silver (1970), Golden (1995)
and Diamond (2005) Jubilee celebrations. Long Live
Shivaji !
