10+2 Technical Cadets Training Scheme
(1985)
This scheme based on the policy “Catch them
young at college” was initiated in May –1985 to
overcome the acute shortage of technical officers. The
course was of 4 years duration. The first batch passed
out on 06th August 1989 when the author was the
Commanding Officer, then. The scheme has proved
a great success both in terms of quality and quantity.
Shifting the entire officers’ training to Ezhimala
in Kerala along with the training of ‘X’ officers in my
humble opinion, does not appear to be a step in the
right direction and not considered as a healthy move
for the Engineering Branch. The entire infrastructural
facilities by way of college, separate mess and
accommodation already set up shall be rendered
redundant. However, time alone will tell.
Computer and Control Engineering
Laboratory. Set up in 1988.
Simulator training for certain classes of
ships. Set up in 1990.
Air Conditioning and Refrigeration shop.
set up in 1991.
Damage Control Simulator. Commissioned in
2001. The unique feature of this simulator which
provides rolling of the ship to 15 degrees either side
has been entirely designed and built by Goa
Shipyard Ltd. At a cost of Rs.16 crores only. This
simulator has been designed to create live flooding
situation as if out at sea.

Swimming Pool in 1988. This enabled
trainees to pass the compulsory swimming test in
house instead of going to Mumbai.
Officers Mess commissioned in May,
1989. (The old mess was converted into an Officers
Institute)
Cadets Mess and Accommodation. Was set up
for 150 cadets in May, 1989.
Indoor Basket Ball Court. The basketball
with computer controlled scoreboard set up in
August, 1989 and inaugurated by staging the interservices
basket ball championship. This indoor facility
