• The new ensign was trying to impress everybody with what he'd learned in submarine school when

• A phone call in the middle of the night is no surprise when you're in the military. I had just got one
and was on my way out the door when my mother, who was living with me, woke up and asked, "Where are
you going?"
"I have to report to base," I said. "We have an exercise." Puzzled, she responded, "You exercise in the middle
of the night?"

While patrolling in the Andamans during my midshipman days, I was keeping a watch when
my C.O. decided to quiz me and my coursemate. After being quizzed for a while, I was directed to
revert back to watchkeeping duties. Then, it was the turn of my coursemate, Mid James to get quizzed.
I was busy keeping a watch on a fishing boat when James missed one question. “ Give a shot, Patil”
said the C.O. I hesitated as my attention was on the fishing boat. “Come on snotty, give a shot” boomed
the voice of the Commanding Officer. Promptly, I landed a blow on the head of my coursemate. “
Oh no, I meant "take a guess” sighed the C.O.
