Description<br />

The socio-economic conditions of Aborig<strong>in</strong>al people <strong>in</strong> Canada have been much<br />

lower than the non-Aborig<strong>in</strong>al population. Historical grievances regard<strong>in</strong>g l<strong>and</strong><br />

claims <strong>and</strong> reconciliation rema<strong>in</strong> an issue for the Aborig<strong>in</strong>al population, as the l<strong>and</strong><br />

claim process has been slow <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>efficient. The Ontario M<strong>in</strong>istry of Aborig<strong>in</strong>al Affairs<br />

(MMA) adopted measures to streaml<strong>in</strong>e the research <strong>and</strong> assessment of l<strong>and</strong><br />

claims <strong>and</strong> claim assertions so as to expedite the process of address<strong>in</strong>g l<strong>and</strong> claims.<br />

MMA has promoted collaboration across m<strong>in</strong>istries on policy <strong>and</strong> program <strong>in</strong>itiatives,<br />

plays a facilitative role for Aborig<strong>in</strong>al people, achieves more strategic federal<br />

engagement, promotes broader awareness <strong>and</strong> underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g of Aborig<strong>in</strong>al peoples<br />

<strong>and</strong> issues, <strong>and</strong> provides corporate leadership for communication <strong>and</strong> messag<strong>in</strong>g on<br />

corporate aborig<strong>in</strong>al issues.<br />
