Description<br />

Malnutrition mortality rates among children under five years of age were <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g<br />

at an alarm<strong>in</strong>g rate <strong>in</strong> Antioquia. High rates of acute diarrhea disease <strong>and</strong> respiratory<br />

<strong>in</strong>fections were both common child illnesses as recorded <strong>in</strong> DANE <strong>in</strong> 2002. Creation<br />

of Plan MANA was adm<strong>in</strong>istered <strong>in</strong> 30 municipalities with highest malnutrition-related<br />

deaths. Plan MANA consists of six different thematic solutions, relat<strong>in</strong>g to food<br />

<strong>and</strong> nutritional security, as <strong>in</strong>itiated by the Governor of Antioquia. The solutions <strong>in</strong>cluded<br />

provision of nutritional food supplements to children under six years of age,<br />

nutrition recovery for malnourished children, health services for pregnant women<br />

with low gestational weight, community-based nutrition surveillance tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />

assess<strong>in</strong>g nutrition records of children participat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> programs. Child deaths from<br />

malnutrition have significantly decreased from 10.6% <strong>in</strong> 2004 to 3.3% <strong>in</strong> 2009 to<br />

only one reported death <strong>in</strong> 2010.<br />
