By some estimates, Belo Horizonte’s Participatory Budget has mobilized over 220,000 people, the majority belonging to the less privileged classes. Belo Horizonte is administered by a coalition of political parties, social militants and civil society leaders. Today the city has a democratically elected administration, which counts among its principles popular participation in city management. Citizens identify needs, help allocate resources and prioritize investments, all of which helps to orient city planning.
