Fly<strong>in</strong>g Doctor Services, the National Food <strong>and</strong> Nutrition Commission, the Tropical<br />

Disease Research Centre, the University of Zambia, <strong>and</strong> the M<strong>in</strong>istry of Health to<br />

implement <strong>in</strong>tegrated family plann<strong>in</strong>g, as well as nutrition <strong>and</strong> parasite control<br />

programs. These <strong>in</strong>itiatives resulted <strong>in</strong> the reduction of maternal mortality from<br />

660 per 100,000 to 330 per 100,000 <strong>and</strong> the reduction of <strong>in</strong>fant mortality from 54%<br />

to 84%. As for health performance improvements, the TB cure rate has <strong>in</strong>creased<br />

from 63% to 74%; <strong>in</strong> family plann<strong>in</strong>g new patients’ rate has <strong>in</strong>creased from<br />

46/1,000 to 129.7/1,000; <strong>and</strong> the antenatal coverage went from 50% <strong>in</strong> 2000 to<br />

84% <strong>in</strong> 2005. Increas<strong>in</strong>g the number of professional staff was also a contribut<strong>in</strong>g<br />

factor <strong>in</strong> the success of the project.<br />
