The first two phases of the communication strategy targeted disability peak bodies <strong>and</strong><br />

government-funded employment service providers who work with both employers<br />

<strong>and</strong> job seekers/employees with disability. These phases were designed to prepare the<br />

way for the new service <strong>and</strong> promote its use among employment service providers.<br />

The f<strong>in</strong>al phase of the communication strategy was targeted directly at the employers<br />

themselves. This phase <strong>in</strong>cluded direct mail outs to employers, onl<strong>in</strong>e market<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />

pr<strong>in</strong>t media advertis<strong>in</strong>g. It focused on the bus<strong>in</strong>ess benefits of employ<strong>in</strong>g people.<br />

Promotion <strong>and</strong> advertis<strong>in</strong>g highlighted the free practical advice <strong>and</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ancial assistance<br />

available to employers, either onl<strong>in</strong>e or by telephone through JobAccess.<br />

A ’Need Staff?’ kit was distributed to employers <strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>dustries most likely to be<br />

affected by skills shortages. The kit conta<strong>in</strong>ed a DVD of employer experiences. Employers<br />

discussed the tangible benefits that employ<strong>in</strong>g people with disability had on<br />

their organisation <strong>and</strong> encouraged other employers to look beyond their traditional<br />

recruitment channels <strong>and</strong> give people with disability an opportunity.<br />

After a year of consultation, plann<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> development, the Department released JobAccess<br />

on 3 July 2006. The site <strong>and</strong> service was officially launched by the M<strong>in</strong>ister for<br />

Workforce Participation <strong>in</strong> Melbourne <strong>in</strong> August 2006 <strong>and</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ues to be enhanced.<br />

JobAccess is a comprehensive resource for employers, people with disability, their<br />

co-workers <strong>and</strong> employment service providers. It is a one-stop <strong>in</strong>formation shop with<br />

a very user-friendly website. Content on the website has been authored specifically<br />

for each target audience. The ’Employers’ section of the site focuses on the bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

benefits of employ<strong>in</strong>g people with disability, dispell<strong>in</strong>g common misunderst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>gs<br />

<strong>and</strong> myths. Employers can f<strong>in</strong>d statistics demonstrat<strong>in</strong>g that people with disability<br />

can have fewer accidents, lower absenteeism <strong>and</strong> lower recruitment costs than other<br />

employees. Employers can also f<strong>in</strong>d practical guides enabl<strong>in</strong>g them to become ’disability<br />

confident’ organisations, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g access to free copies of a Mental Health<br />

First Aid <strong>in</strong> the Workplace e-learn<strong>in</strong>g CD.<br />

The <strong>in</strong>formation-rich website (www.jobaccess.govt.au) <strong>in</strong>cludes onl<strong>in</strong>e application<br />

forms, a unique database of workplace adjustments <strong>and</strong> solutions <strong>and</strong> free expert<br />

telephone advice. The key benefit of JobAccess is that it removes the <strong>in</strong>formation<br />

barrier that prevents many people with disability from gett<strong>in</strong>g a job.<br />

The JobAccess Advice service is contracted to WorkFocus Australia, an organisation<br />

with 17 years of experience <strong>in</strong> the sector. The JobAccess Advisers organise free<br />

workplace assessments <strong>and</strong> modifications as part of the Workplace Modifications<br />

Scheme <strong>and</strong> facilitate access to Australian Sign Language (Auslan) <strong>in</strong>terpret<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g through the Auslan For Employment Programme. Applications for assistance,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g applications for productivity-based wage assessments, are made on-<br />
