12.6. LP/ms - Laboratory miniProbe for soil water content and salinity<br />

measurement<br />

LP/ms (Fig. 66) - is a laboratory miniprobe designed for monitoring changes<br />

in water and salt distribution in soil columns or in soil cores sampled with<br />

standard sampling instrumentation. Several LP/ms can be inserted through the<br />

sidewall of a soil column or a steel sampling cylinder (Fig. 67), thus allowing for<br />

vertical scanning of the instantaneous moisture and electrical conductivity<br />

profiles.<br />

Such an array, when combined with s<strong>im</strong>ilarly installed minitensiometers<br />

(LP/p), makes it possible to collect a set of corresponding water content and<br />

matrix potential gradient data from drying or wetting front transition. From this<br />

one can obtain a complete set of the soil unsaturated water flow characteristics, ie<br />
