Dear Iowa Voyagers,
The Iowa Voyagers program is delighted to present a new odyssey to the ancient land of Jordan. Join our small
group on this 12-day comprehensive tour as we discover the historical, spiritual and geological phenomena of
this region. We are pleased to share this departure with alumni from the University of Illinois.
Our journey begins with a full-day excursion in the spirited capital city of Amman. Tour the King Hussein
Mosque and the glittering Gold Market. Meet locals engaged in nature preservation at the Wild Jordan Centre.
We then travel to Jerash, the ancient Roman ruins found in a splendid state of preservation. Enjoy spectacular
views of the Dead Sea, the Jordan Valley, and perhaps Jerusalem from atop the pilgrimage site of Mt. Nebo,
speculated to be the final resting place of Moses.
A trip highlight includes an excursion to the red-rose, “lost city” of Petra. Rediscovered in the 19th century,
this UNESCO site was carved into the sheer rock face of the Sharah Mountains. We’ll explore the Monastery,
colonnaded streets, red-hued tombs, funerary halls, and enter through the long, narrow rock chamber to come
face to face with the magnificent Treasury. Moving into the southern desert region, we’ll enjoy a jeep ride
through the ethereal moonscape of Wadi Rum.
View the kaleidoscope of marine life with a snorkeling excursion in the Red Sea resort of Aqaba. Finally, head
back north to the shores of the Dead Sea. We’ll enjoy visits to biblical sites and as well as a geological museum
to learn about this mystical region. Those who wish may extend their Jordanian odyssey by adding a 4-day/3-
night stay at the Dead Sea resort to take advantage of the region's therapeutic waters and the hotel’s spa facilities.

GENERAL TERMS AND CONDITIONS
Please read this information carefully, as payment of a $500 deposit per person represents your acceptance
of the following Terms and Conditions.
Not included in tour price
Airfare from your hometown to your gateway city and return; costs of passports and visas; airport,
port, and departure taxes, which will be listed as separate items on your invoice and are subject
to change; personal expenses such as beverages, laundry, room service, and meals not specified;
excess baggage fees; airport transfers when purchasing a land-only package; communication
charges; optional sightseeing; gratuities to your Odysseys Unlimited Tour Director, which are at
your discretion (suggested gratuities $10 - $15 per day per traveler); travel protection insurance.
Cancellations, refunds and changes
If you must cancel your trip, the effective date of cancellation will be upon our receipt of your
written notification. Refunds for cancellations are subject to the following per person charges:
Cancel 95 days or more before departure: $200 charge; Cancel 94-65 days before departure:
$500 charge; Cancel 64-45 days before departure: 25% of tour price; Cancel 44-30 days before
departure: 50% of tour; Cancel 29-0 days before departure: No refund. If a guest makes any
changes between 94 and 30 days prior to departure to either their departure city and/or the
optional post-tour extension, Odysseys Unlimited, Inc. will apply a $100 per person administrative
fee, in addition to any fees or penalties imposed by third parties. No changes are allowed
within 30 days of departure.
Upon reservation you must provide your full legal name as it appears on your passport. In
the event an airline ticket is issued with incorrect information you have provided, you will be
responsible for charges associated with the ticket’s reissue.
Responsibility
The liability of The University of Iowa Alumni Association, as sponsor, and Odysseys Unlimited, Inc.,
as tour operator, is strictly limited. The University of Iowa Alumni Association and Odysseys
Unlimited, Inc. purchase transportation, hotel accommodations, restaurant and other services from
independent suppliers not under our control. We serve only as agents for these suppliers in securing
tour arrangements, and therefore will not accept responsibility for wrongful, negligent, or arbitrary
acts or omissions of these independent contractors, their employees, agents, servants or representatives.
The University of Iowa Alumni Association and Odysseys Unlimited, Inc. are not liable
for injury, damage, loss, accident, or delay that may be caused by events not within our control,
including without limitation, acts of terrorism, war, strikes, the defect of any vehicle, or the negligence
or default of any third party. All coupons, receipts, and tickets issued are subject to the terms
and conditions specified by the air carriers, cruise line, and other independent suppliers.
We will make every effort to operate our tours as planned, but we reserve the right to make itinerary
changes as necessary. If unforeseen circumstances require us to change a hotel, we will
select alternative accommodations of the same or better quality. If you choose to make your own
air arrangements, Odysseys Unlimited, Inc. shall not have any liability for any loss resulting from
cancellation of this tour or changes in this tour.

Day 1: Depart U.S. for Amman, Jordan
Day 2: Arrive Amman Upon arrival early this
evening, we meet our Odysseys Unlimited tour
director and transfer to our hotel, where we
have a briefing on the journey ahead.
Day 3: Amman A morning walking tour introduces
us to this lively Middle Eastern capital.
We meet locals engaged in nature preservation
at the Wild Jordan Centre; taste the renowned
falafel sandwich at Hashem restaurant; and tour
the glittering Gold Market. Other sites include
the Ottoman-style King Hussein Mosque; the
busy streets and vegetable markets near the
Nymphaeum fountain (ca. 191 AD); the ancient
Roman Theatre (ca. 170 AD), still in use today;
and the Citadel (El-Qala), offering excellent city
views. After lunch in the home of a local Amman
family, the remainder of the afternoon is at leisure.
Tonight we visit the walled village of Kan Zaman,
where we dine on authentic Jordanian cuisine
and enjoy Arab music and dancing. B,L,D
Day 4: Ajloun/Jerash Today we travel north
through scenic pine forests and olive groves to
the town of Ajloun, site of the well preserved
Qalaat Errabadh ("Hilltop Castle"), built in
1184 for protection from the Crusaders, with
grand views of the Jordan Valley. We continue
on to the Roman ruins of Jerash, dubbed the
“Pompeii of the East” for its splendid state of
preservation. After lunch here we explore the
colonnaded streets, theaters, churches, and temples
that comprise the largest Roman site outside
Italy. At Jerash’s newly restored Hippodrome,
we see a performance of Circa Gerasa, a Roman
spectacle with gladiators, chariot racing, and
military showmanship. B,L

We spend two days exploring the “lost city” of Petra, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Day 5: Amman/Petra Traveling from Amman
to Petra today, we stop en route in Madaba,
“City of Mosaics,” known especially for the
Byzantine-era mosaic map of Jerusalem and the
Holy Land. We see this ancient relic covering the
floor of a church here then continue on to the
important pilgrimage site of Mt. Nebo, where
Moses is believed to have been buried overlooking
the Jordan Valley. We visit Mt. Nebo’s 4 th - and
6 th -century Byzantine churches, and may be able
to catch glimpses of Jerusalem roof-tops in the
far distance. From Mt. Nebo we proceed to the
imposing Crusader fortress at Kerak, which presided
over the King’s Highway in antiquity. Early this
evening we reach the “Lost City” of Petra. B,L,D
Day 6: Petra A UNESCO World Heritage
site and one the “New Seven Wonders of the
World,”the archaeological site of Petra fills even
seasoned travelers with jaw-dropping wonder. We
set out this morning to explore this “rose-red city
half as old as time,” a collection of red-hued temples,
tombs, civic buildings, an entire city carved
into the sheer rock face of the Sharah Mountains
by the Nabataeans more than 2,000 years ago.
Having prospered from antiquity to the Byzantine
era, Petra then was “lost” to all but desert dwellers
until its rediscovery in 1812 by a Swiss traveler.
Entering through the Siq, the long, narrow rock
chamber that betrays no hint of the splendor
inside, we spend the day exploring Petra: the dramatic
Treasury (a key backdrop in Indiana Jones and
the Last Crusade), the Monastery, 3,000-seat
theater, colonnaded streets, rock-cut tombs,
temple façades, shrines, and funerary halls. B,L
Day 7: Petra We return to Petra to spend this
morning among the ruins then visit the nearby
Al Beida (Little Petra), an ancient suburb that
resembles Petra itself. Dinner tonight presents
a special opportunity to prepare a typical Jordanian
meal alongside local women and a chef at Petra
Kitchen, whose furnishings, décor, and tableware
all are handcrafted in Jordan. B,D
Day 8: Petra/Wadi Rum/Aqaba A two-hour
drive south brings us to Wadi Rum, the dramatic
landscape of pink and white sands, ancient valleys,
and towering sandstone monoliths rising from
the desert floor. Empty and silent, timeless and
isolated, Wadi Rum was headquarters for T.E.
Lawrence and Prince Faisal bin Hussein during

the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire in
1917-18 – and where David Lean filmed parts
of his 1962 epic Lawrence of Arabia. We’ll take a
jeep ride through this other-worldly moonscape
then enjoy lunch together. We continue on to
Aqaba, arriving late this afternoon. B,L

Day 12: Depart for U.S. We depart this morning
for the Amman airport, where we connect
with our return flight to the U.S. B
Day 9: Aqaba From desert red to ocean indigo:
today we encounter the beauty of Jordan’s
front-row seat on the Red Sea, where an off-shore
coral reef offers a dazzling kaleidoscope of marine
life. We have the opportunity to take an included
snorkeling excursion (if we wish) to come faceto-face
with the clownfish, Picasso triggerfish,
parrotfish, and sea anemone, among the many
residents of the reef. This afternoon is at leisure
to enjoy the amenities of our beach resort. This
evening we enjoy a sunset cruise followed by
dinner at the hotel. B,D
Day 10: Aqaba/Dead Sea Believed to have
been the site of five biblical cities, including
Sodom and Gomorrah, the Dead Sea boasts a
legacy of historical, spiritual, and geological
import. This salt lake lying between Israel to
the west, Jordan to the east ranks as the world’s
deepest hypersaline lake and second-saltiest body
of water. We learn about this rare geographic
phenomenon at the Dead Sea Panorama, a geological
museum with magnificent views of the
Dead Sea and the hills beyond. We reach our
hotel early afternoon; the remainder of the day
is free to “float” in the therapeutic waters or
enjoy the hotel’s spa facilities. B,L
Day 11: Dead Sea/Bethany Beyond the
Jordan The Bible comes to life on today’s
excursion to the Baptism Site at Bethany
Beyond the Jordan, the area along the Jordan
River where John the Baptist lived and Jesus
was baptized. Since 1996, archaeologists have
unearthed 20 churches, caves, and baptismal
pools dating from the Roman and Byzantine
