RIVER SHIELD<br />

Each of the questions, respectively correct answers, related to the Risk<br />

Assessment Procedure is of great importance for reducing the threat of loses<br />

and/or damages of the:<br />

v human lives and health;<br />

v natural and industrial resources, incl. arable land and biodiversity;<br />

v material goods, incl. industrial facilities, infrastructure, human settlements, etc.<br />

This is why the detailed knowledge about potential sources of risks from industrial<br />

accidents makes possible planning actions of both prevention and mitigation of the<br />

accidents consequences.<br />

The present report is based on data kindly granted mostly by the Executive<br />

Environmental Agency (EEA, Sofia) and West Aegean River Basin Directorate<br />

(WABD, Blagoevgrad).<br />

This presentation will offer to your kind attention a general picture of risky activities<br />

in the industrial sector as follows from the title and content of the current project.


Basin of the Struma River<br />

RIVER SHIELD<br />

General data:<br />

Watershed is generally mountainous and<br />

takes the South-Western part of the<br />

Bulgaria, bordering with Serbia, Macedonia<br />

and Greece.<br />

The total surface of the watershed is about<br />

10 797 sq. km, which is about 10% of the<br />

country territory or the second largest<br />

basin in Bulgaria.<br />

The total length of the Struma River is about 290 km in Bulgaria, , and some 115 km within<br />

Greece.<br />

42 tributaries of 1 st and 2 nd order feed the main coarse of the Struma River.<br />

The <strong>river</strong> is of great importance for the population and its economic omic activities along<br />

the watershed. All municipalities alongside the Struma River are included within the<br />

South-Western Economic Development Region, , incl. districts of Pernik, Kyustendil<br />

and Blagoevgrad.

generated by the industry<br />

Basin of the Mesta River<br />

General data:<br />

Watershed is generally mountainous and<br />

takes the South-Western part of the<br />

Bulgaria, bordering with the Greece.<br />

The total surface of the watershed is about<br />

2 800 sq. km, with man altitude of the main<br />

course 1300 m a.s.l. – the highest watershed<br />

in the country.<br />

The total length of the Mesta River is about<br />

126 km in Bulgaria, and some 140 km within<br />

the Greece.<br />

The main <strong>river</strong> accepts the discharge of 25 tributaries, , of them Dospat River enters Mesta into<br />

Greece.<br />

Municipalities of the Mesta Basin which belong to the district of o Blagoevgrad are also included<br />

into .<br />

the South-Western Economic Development Region. . The valley of the tributary Dospat R.<br />

is outside this region.
