contractile vacuoles along <strong>the</strong> cell; 2, Trachelophyllum apiculatum, flaskshaped,<br />
with an elongated neck and cytostome on <strong>the</strong> snout-like tip (inset),<br />
contractile vacuole is terminal, body length 120 μm; 3, Lacrymaria olor, with<br />
<strong>the</strong> long extensile neck, body length 380 μm; 4, Lacrymaria olor, contracted,<br />
with protrusable snout which has two distinct zones (inset); 5, Lacrymaria<br />
coronata group, flask-shaped ciliate, with <strong>the</strong> single terminal contractile<br />

belts, <strong>the</strong> equatorial ciliary belt close to globular trunk, body length 18 μm; 7,<br />
8, 9, 10, 11, Monodinium balbiani, carnivorous ciliate, with one ciliary wreath<br />
encircling <strong>the</strong> oral cone, composed <strong>of</strong> nematodesmata (8, arrow) and sausageshaped<br />
