2012 Annual Report
“Moments”
by Christina Stella (Interlochen Arts Camp 2011)
Letter from the President, Jeffrey S. Kimpton
www.interlochen.org/moments
Welcome to an artistic sphere that ceaselessly turns,
where nights pass above us so slowly
and morning’s air, soaked in light,
wakes the earth, ready to create.
There is nothing so sweet
to the young heart as lending itself
to moments.
We cradle the seconds caught like moths between our fingers,
pierced by the song of the human spirit.
Open, and listen
to the lungs of a symphony, stitched together
note by note,
feel the arches of feet curve, the rippling body.
Here, our artistic playground where laughter calls like bells
through the breezes,
where hands mold thoughts
that fester within us,
where dreams happen anywhere;
against the lights of a stage
in the faces of friends, sharing
their youth like water,
in a moment of solace beside the lake.
We take these as memories;
in this place, we are people who see the journey of art
through thick silences of thought
an image coming to life
the characters of the ages revisited and relived
under the Pine and promise of Interlochen.
To Our Friends and Partners:
On behalf of the trustees and staff of Interlochen Center for the Arts, I am pleased to share this annual
report for fiscal year 2012 ( June 1, 2011 – May 31, 2012).
This was a milestone year for Interlochen, as we celebrated the 50th anniversary of our high school Arts
Academy with national tours and an all-school reunion that brought nearly 1,000 alumni back to campus.
We reflected on the past, rejoiced in the present and began an ongoing dialogue about the future – a
future that is bringing dramatic changes to the arts, creativity and learning.
Interlochen has always been an institution intent on looking ahead. We were founded on the belief that
young men and women, given the opportunity, were capable of extraordinary artistry. Now in our 85th
year of operation, that belief has been reaffirmed many times over. What began in 1928 as a summer program
for high school orchestra musicians has expanded to include every art form, encompass artists of all ages
and enrich the community through concerts, radio and the web. We’ve increased our connection to the
world around us through new technology, and consistently sought new opportunities to broaden the
vision of what is possible in the arts. Interlochen is reaching more people in more ways than ever before.
More than just documenting the financial health of the organization, the numbers in this report describe
a remarkably vibrant community – a community of students and teachers, parents, alumni, patrons,
performers, broadcasters, listeners, donors and friends. The strength of Interlochen is reflected in the
number of individuals who share the values this institution champions, who believe that world-class arts
education, outstanding performances and award-winning public radio enhance the quality of life.
It takes an extraordinary community to make Interlochen possible. Thank you for caring about the future of
the arts. We are fortunate indeed to celebrate the many achievements made possible through your generosity.
With deep gratitude and appreciation,
Jeffrey S. Kimpton
In honor of the Arts Academy’s 50th anniversary, several former students and parents pledged
to match new or increased gifts to the Interlochen Fund from alumni, current and former
wonderful generosity of the IAA community, we far exceeded that initial goal. Gifts from IAA
parents and alumni were up by more than $197,000 – exceeding $700,000 and representing
a 39% increase over the previous year. The number of alumni donors increased by 24%. That
translated into more money for student scholarships this fall!
The following donors provided the generous challenge funds:
Sound Management: Interlochen Earns a 4-Star
Rating from Charity Navigator
Sound fiscal management practices and commitment to accountability and transparency have earned
Interlochen Center for the Arts a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, America’s largest independent
charity evaluator.
Since 2002, using data-driven analysis, Charity Navigator has awarded only the most fiscally responsible
organizations a 4-star rating. In 2011, Charity Navigator added a second dimension of Accountability
and Transparency (A&T) to its rating methodology, and now reviews 17 governance and ethical
practices as well as measures of openness, providing information on its web site for each of the charities
it evaluates. The A&T metrics, which account for 50 percent of a charity’s overall rating, reveal which
charities have “best practices” that minimize the chance of unethical activities and whether they freely
share basic information about their organization with their donors and other stakeholders. Receiving
four out of a possible four stars indicates that Interlochen adheres to good governance and consistently
executes its mission in a fiscally responsible way.
“Interlochen Center for the Arts’ coveted 4-star rating puts
it in a very select group of high-performing charities,” according
to Ken Berger, President and CEO of Charity Navigator.
“Interlochen supporters should feel much more confident
that their hard-earned dollars are being used efficiently
and responsibly when it acquires such a high rating.”
Donors contributed a total of $2,381,263
to the Interlochen Fund in fiscal year 2012,
an increase of 7.2% over the previous year.
Support comes from a variety of sources,
including thousands of individual gifts
from alumni, parents and friends. Government
support (an $8,500 grant from the
Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural
Affairs) accounted for less than half of one
percent of Interlochen Fund contributions.
Artistic talent – not financial means – is the common denominator among
Interlochen students. Our high school Academy students come from families
with an average household income of $82,250. With Academy tuition
exceeding $48,000, our capacity to provide financial support is critical to
our ability to sustain a diverse and talented student body. Thanks to the
generosity of individuals who support our scholarship program, Interlochen
was able to provide financial assistance to more than 80% of our
Academy students last year. By comparison, according to the most recent
survey of the National Association of Independent Schools, most independent
schools provide financial aid to only 30% of their students.
The need for financial assistance has grown dramatically over the last five
years. Last year, Interlochen awarded a record $10.9 million in scholarships
and financial aid to our students. A central component of that effort is our
annual giving program, the Interlochen Fund.
Interlochen investments/funds under management
have increased more than 160% over the past 10 years.
The continued growth of our endowment will be a key
component of Interlochen’s future success. Endowment
funds help balance the cash flow of the organization,
providing an ongoing source of funds to support financial
aid and other operational needs – including guest
artists, capital improvement projects and preservation
of our aging facilities.
By policy of the Board of Trustees, 4.5% of our
endowment is returned to Interlochen to support
the needs of the institution. This policy is designed
to allow the endowment to grow at a rate equal to or
greater than the rate of inflation.
Endowed scholarship funds are central to our financial
aid program. Interlochen currently benefits from more
than 200 endowed student scholarships that help ensure
the very best students are provided unfettered access
to Interlochen regardless of financial status. Donors can
establish an endowed Camp or Academy scholarship
with a commitment of $50,000 or $75,000, respectively.
By designating endowment gifts for scholarships,
donors can permanently support a facet of Interlochen
that is most dear to them.
To fully fund our financial aid program at its current
level, Interlochen would need $242 million in endowed
scholarship funds.
Interlochen’s emergency generator
system was put to the test in
early March, when a late-winter
weekend storm with near blizzard
conditions hit northern
Michigan – dropping more
than 18 inches of snow on
Interlochen. The heavy, wet
snow downed tree limbs and
caused power outages throughout
the region. More than 147,000
residents in northern Michigan
were reported to be without
power and a state of emergency
was declared in Benzie, Leelanau
and Grand Traverse Counties.
Our students, faculty and staff
on campus were safe and sound,
as Interlochen’s generators kicked
on and handled the load. The
generator system, comprised
of four units with 1,000 gallon
tanks each, was installed in
2008 and provides enough
power to keep the campus running
mid-summer when there
are hundreds of buildings in
use and more than 2,000 people
living on the grounds.
Making Dreams Feel Possible
How does a young violinist and visual artist from Bloomfield
Hills, Michigan, grow up to become a writer on one of the
top crime dramas on network television? He starts out
by spending four summers at Interlochen Arts Camp,
surrounded by creative peers and supportive adults who
help him believe that he really can pursue a life in the arts.
For camp alumnus Dave Kalstein (IAC 88-90, 93), that’s
exactly how it started.
Dave first arrived at camp as an 11-year-old Junior, toting
his violin case. In subsequent summers, he switched his
Dave Kalstein (IAC 88-90, 93)
focus to visual arts. At that time, there wasn’t a creative
writing program at camp, but the Interlochen community nonetheless encouraged
Dave’s developing interest in writing. “It was a place where I could read my poetry to
other kids and they wouldn’t laugh at me,” Dave says. “It was a place where I could try
out stories on my peers and they’d give me critique. We didn’t know we were workshopping
writing because we were only 13 years old, but that’s what we were doing.”
For Dave, it was the culture of Interlochen that made the difference. “Interlochen
made me believe that I could pursue something creative for a living, and it made
me believe that there were people like me out there.” He went on to pursue writing
for a living, first in the magazine world in New York and then in Hollywood as a
scriptwriter and novelist. Today he’s a writer/producer for NCIS: Los Angeles.
Dave recently established the Dave Kalstein Scholarship to help a high school
camper study creative writing at Interlochen Arts Camp each summer. He thought
about naming the scholarship after his parents or someone else who has helped him
along the path to success but decided instead that it was important for the recipient
to know his story, that out there in Hollywood “there’s a guy named Dave Kalstein,
and one day, long ago, he was just like you.” He understands that for many young
artists the idea of pursuing their dream of a life in the arts seems like a fantasy. “Ask
anyone who does something in the arts for a living,” Dave says, “and they’ll all be
able to identify a moment when the dream started to feel real to them. Interlochen
is where that happened for me.” With the Dave Kalstein Scholarship, Dave hopes to
make that moment possible for other young writers at Interlochen.
Thank You Interlochen Donors
“Find what you love and support it”
Interlochen Volunteers Make an Impact
Sarah Titus (IAA 80-82, IAC Staff 81-82) first stepped onto the Interlochen campus in the fall of 1980,
excited to begin her junior year at Interlochen Arts Academy. She quickly realized she had become a part of
something special: a loving, supportive environment, full of the arts.
“I felt very loved there, and it wasn’t just one teacher – it was everyone,” Sarah
recalls of her time at the Academy. “They cared about how I was doing.”
Each year, Interlochen Center for the Arts is privileged to have a dedicated group of volunteers ...
ushering at concerts, staffing the information booth, leading campus tours, working in the costume
and scene shops, planting flowers, assisting in the office and helping with many other tasks. From June
2011 through May 2012, a total of 395 volunteers donated their talents to Interlochen – contributing
more than 15,000 total hours. This represents an estimated cost savings of more than $150,000!
A violinist from Dallas, Texas, Sarah found out about Interlochen when her violin
teacher, running late for a lesson, gave her a copy of the Interlochen catalogue to
pass the time. It landed in her lap at just the right moment. She had been unhappy
in her public school, and her parents had already enrolled her in a boarding school
closer to home. “I was already being measured for the plaid skirt,” Sarah says, “but
when I opened the catalogue and saw the knickers, I went home and said, ‘I’m going
to Interlochen.’” It was a perfect fit.
Sarah knows that Interlochen continues to be a perfect fit for young artists today,
many of whom wouldn’t be able to attend Interlochen without scholarship support.
To make the Interlochen Arts Academy experience possible for even more
students, this year Sarah established the Sarah L. Titus and Tilda Morris Endowed Academy Scholarship.
Sarah Titus (IAA 80-82, IAC Staff 81-82)
Sarah made the decision to become an Interlochen donor before she graduated from the Academy. “It
just was part of my upbringing to support the arts. It was ingrained in me from a young age, without
words,” Sarah explains, noting that she saw her parents contributing to Interlochen even as they paid
tuition. Her parents used to tell her, “Find what you love, what you’re passionate about, and support it.”
A pew in Dendrinos Chapel has a plaque engraved with her name to remind her of her family’s commitment
to giving back. She began making regular contributions herself soon after graduation and has
looked for opportunities to increase her commitment over the years.
Sarah and her partner, fellow Academy alumna Tilda Morris (IAA 81-82), returned to campus in May for the
Academy’s 50th anniversary celebration. Taking her place amongst the violins on the Kresge stage as part of
the student-alumni string orchestra that performed during collage, she once again experienced the embrace
of Interlochen. Describing the time rehearsing and performing together with current students and dozens of
alumni from all decades of the Academy, she says, “We were strangers, but we sat down together and it was
like we were one orchestra.”
With her decision to establish a named endowed scholarship this year, Sarah helps ensure that students
will find their place at Interlochen for years to come. “I’m just happy to be a part of it,” she says.
Thank you volunteers!
Lee Wick Dennison
Remembering Interlochen Trustee Lee Wick Dennison:
A Lifetime Commitment to the Arts
Lee Wick Dennison of Chevy Chase, Maryland, Youngstown, Ohio and Traverse City,
Michigan, died peacefully at Munson Hospice House on Friday, August 31, 2012, after a
brief illness. She was 60 years old.
Born June 2, 1952 in Youngstown, Ohio, Lee attended Interlochen Arts Camp in 1966-67 and
was a 1970 graduate of Interlochen Arts Academy, where she studied piano. She attended Lake
Erie College and Oxford University, graduating with a B.A. in music history, and received
an M.S. in Accounting from Georgetown University. She was a Certified Public Accountant.
Lee began a lifelong career with the National Endowment for the Arts in 1975. She served
in a variety of increasingly important positions including Director, Organizational Capacity. She knew more
than anyone about the inner workings of arts organizations throughout this country and cared passionately
about them all. In 1988 and 1999 she received the Distinguished Service Award, the highest award offered
by the NEA. In 1991 she was named a Senior Executive Fellow at the John F. Kennedy School of Government,
Harvard University. She was a member of the Class of 1998, Leadership America, a national women’s leadership
organization. Following her retirement from the NEA in 2004, she served on the boards of the Religious Society
of Friends in Bethesda, Maryland, the MARPAT Foundation and Interlochen Center for the Arts.
Lee traveled widely throughout the United States, Central America, Latvia, Europe and beyond, and also
enjoyed turning her small, nondescript early 20th century carriage house into a beautifully renovated gem
in the heart of Chevy Chase, MD. She was a two-time participant of the Washington, DC Avon Walk for
Breast Cancer, walking 60 miles to raise funds for Breast Cancer research.
As a former camper and Academy student, Lee was keenly interested in helping enrich the experience of
Interlochen students, especially when it came to recreation and wellness. She was the primary supporter in
getting a campus ropes course established in the late 1990s, and she would see to it that very simple things
were available … such as apples for every dorm throughout the year.
Thank You
She was one of the initial supporters and champions when revered IAA faculty member Howard Hintze
retired and Interlochen was establishing an endowed fund in his honor. Her support for the Tally Thomas
Commons in the Aaron and Helen L. DeRoy Center for Film Studies was Lee’s way of providing an area for
students to congregate and socialize in a “student union” type setting.
“We already miss her wit, charm, advocacy and unselfish commitment to our institution,” said Beth Stoner,
Interlochen Associate Vice President for Advancement. Lee will be remembered for her devotion to the
arts, many social causes for which she cared deeply, her extensive exotic world travels, her laugh and wit, her
insatiable curiosity, and her steadfast devotion to lifelong friends who were her family.
