Erich Kunzel
USA
Erich Kunzel had an unwavering vision to bring the World Choir Games to Cincinnati USA
and showcase the region’s rich musical heritage and commitment to the arts. In June 2009,
that vision became reality.
The organizers of the 7 th World Choir Games have dedicated the Games to Erich Kunzel, the
legendary conductor of the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra who passed away on September 1,
2009 after a four-month battle with cancer.
In a career spanning more than 50 years, Maestro Kunzel conducted orchestra across the
globe, including appearances with the National Symphony, the Chicago Symphony and the
Boston Pops, among others. He was presented with the National Medal of Arts by President
and Mrs. George W. Bush, and was a 2009 inductee into the American Classical Music
Hall of Fame.
“From the start, we were so impressed with Erich’s boundless energy, passion and enthusiasm,
and he was a key factor in why we chose Cincinnati for the Games in the first place.
It is only fitting that we dedicate the 7 th World Choir Games in his honor. Erich’s talent
and vision cannot be replaced, but the dedication will serve as a constant reminder about
Cincinnati USA’s beloved favorite son who helped make it all possible.”
