The citizens of Zagreb are especially connected to this<br />
statue because it was removed from the main square during<br />
the Communist rule, and they gladly welcomed it back after<br />
the realisation of <strong>Croatian</strong> independence in 1991.<br />
There are also interesting buildings on the outskirts of the<br />
Lower Town. Of these, the most famous one is the Home<br />
of <strong>Croatian</strong> Artists, which was built in 1938 by the most<br />
famous <strong>Croatian</strong> artist, Ivan Meštrović (16). Lower Town<br />
palaces boast the most luxurious interiors (4 & 6) with valuable<br />
furniture (9). The Oktogon passage is especially sophisticated<br />
(10), and is a sort of forerunner of modern day shopping<br />
centres.<br />
On the edges of the Lower Town, new buildings such as the<br />
“Cibona” skyscraper (11) have also risen, although such constructions<br />
are more common in the more modern, southern<br />
