Tombstone Territorial Park The ancient Yukon. In 2005 Holland America Line is proud to introduce its Great Land Klondike visitors to the unique landscapes of Tombstone Territorial Park. This is ancient land, part of the original North American continent, dating back two billion years. Visitors driving out from Dawson City along the famous Dempster Highway will pass through land merely 200 million years old — the Tintina Trench, a massive fault line straddling the Yukon and parts of Alaska — and travel into the sub-arctic tundra valleys of Tombstone Territorial Park. The vistas are endless, the valleys broad and rugged. This land attracted some of the first known settlements of man in the New World and remains the ancestral home of the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in First Nation. It is also the realm of a full range of wildlife, from grizzlies and moose to peregrines and plovers. holland america line and tombstone territorial park Holland America Line will offer optional excursions to Tombstone Territorial Park for those guests traveling to Dawson City in the Yukon (cruisetours 1–6, 27 and 28). Optional excursions will include motorcoach tours through the park and a selected number of interpreted hiking adventures, suited to a wide range of abilities and ambition. Guests looking forward to getting their hiking boots dirty are advised to come prepared for a range of weather conditions. Birdwatchers will want to bring their field guides, as Tombstone is home to over 100 different species. Bring binoculars to spot the golden eagles and the Gyrfalcons. This remote wonderland receives very few visitors. It is untamed in every sense of the word. It is reassuring that these places still exist, and that Holland America guests can visit them. inside tip Combine Tombstone Territorial Park with Kluane and Denali national parks for the most spectacular wilderness vistas in the Great Land. The vistas along the Dempster Highway are grand. Come prepared to gaze great distances. At the same time, the intricate eco-system at your feet is fascinating as well. www.hollandamerica.com 15
Glacier Bay National Park Number-one glacier experience. holland america line spotlights glaciers and wildlife more cruises to glacier bay Holland America Line is the only cruise line to offer Glacier Bay National Park on all three major cruise itineraries — roundtrip from Vancouver or Seattle or cruising between Vancouver and Seward. travel with alaska experts A U.S. park ranger will come aboard to share insights into park history, to point out wildlife and to answer questions throughout your unforgettable day of scenic cruising. And a Huna Totem native speaker will join the ship to impart the legend and lore of this sacred place. wildlife and habitat Search for humpback whales returning from their wintering grounds near Hawaii, killer whales feeding in the park’s nearshore waters, Steller sea lions resting on rocky islands, and harbor seals nurturing their pups. Glacier Bay is the setting for an unforgettable wildlife search. How does it feel when a monumental chunk of ice splits off a glacier and crashes into the sea? The sound is like thunder. The impact shoots water hundreds of feet into the air. You hold your breath as you catch the moment on film. Then you wait for it all to happen again. And it does. Glacier Bay has more actively calving glaciers than anywhere else in the world. And Holland America Line visits this restricted wonderland more often than any other cruise line. Cruise by Reid and Lamplugh glaciers to the mighty Johns Hopkins — surrounded by rugged peaks and sheltering a seal pupping ground. Then linger for a full hour at Grand Pacific and Margerie glaciers for the grandest spectacle of them all. Margerie is an Ice Age giant a mile wide and 25 stories high. Here you will marvel at nature’s unrelenting power as you witness the birth of one massive iceberg after another. inside tip We provide deck chair blankets and complimentary hot pea soup for comfortable glacier viewing. And we sell film aboard ship, so you’ll be camera-ready. The“light-struck wilderness” that John Muir found so compelling back in the 1800s is just as inspiring today. In fact, since then the glaciers have retreated, providing you with sights early explorers missed. Now you can sail up narrow inlets to massive glaciers backed by towering mountains, with wildlife all along the way. 16 www.hollandamerica.com
