Based in Schalkau, Germany, the display by the TIRA company at InnoTrans
2012 features the TIRA K3000 RUF, an underfloor wheelset
balancing machine with a milling unit for use on rolling
stock and locomotives. The use of a friction drive
eliminates the time-consuming work of connecting the
wheelset by means of a shaft to the drive unit. This ensures
that wheelsets can be quickly replaced using
the K3000 RUF. It also rules out manufacturing imprecision
such as incorrect fit tolerances and alignment
errors, with their negative impact on accuracy of the
wheel alignment. Once the alignment speed has been
reached the friction drive separates from the wheelset,
which can then rotate on the machine entirely unaffected
by any external influences. Despite the slow
rotation rate this method enables measurements of
the imbalance to be conducted with extreme precision.
Another advantage of this process is that it enables
radial and lateral deviation of the wheelset to be measured during
the same cycle, with each cycle lasting up to three minutes.

DC-DC converter
Trenew Electronic, sales partner for Power-One products, is presenting
the MELCHER HR range at InnoTrans 2012. This is a DC-
DC converter with a 10:1 input voltage range, up to 280 watt output
at an ambient temperature of 70 degrees Celsius, and with a very
high typical efficiency of 94 per cent. The drastically reduced power
dissipation results in a lower operating temperature and consequently
reliability levels are significantly improved. A single one
of these units is sufficient to provide all nominal battery voltages
from 24 to 120 volts. The static input range is 15.4 to 150 volts. Dynamic
fluctuations to 12 or 168 volts over a two second period do not
present any problems for the converter either. The HR range complies
with all current national and international railway and safety
regulations. Packaged in a robust metal case for installation in a 19
inch rack or chassis, this unit is ideal for demanding environments
with convection cooling.
