Outdoor passenger information and reliable
in-train public address systems
New and efficient 46-inch displays using TFT technology for providing outdoor
passenger information are being exhibited by Funkwerk ITK at InnoTrans
2012. With a luminosity of up to 1,500 cd/m² (televisions: 700 cd/
m²) they are also easy to read in direct sunlight and at a distance. They
are protected in accordance with IP54, while the ability to cope with a
wide temperature range from -20 to +35 desgrees Celsius and their robust,
non-reflective safety glass with UV and IR coating make them ideal
for both covered and exposed stations. To provide in-train passenger information
Funkwerk has developed a new PA and communication system
(ELA) operating at the SIL2 security level. It conforms to the new European
directives that are intended to maintain secure communication
with passengers even in the event of a fire. The new Funkwerk ELA supplements
the exhibitor’s modern, basic system by the addition of a secure
monitoring unit. As a result, and despite the additional security that it pro-
vides, all the usual easy-to-use features, such as availability of the PA system
in selected sections of the train while it is moving, have been retained.
GAI-Tronics: Robust, solar-powered GSM-R telephone
The British company GAI-Tronics is using InnoTrans 2012 for the
world debut of its Titan GSM-R telephone. It has been designed
for outdoor use and is ideal both for permanent or temporary installations.
The GSM-R terminal and the battery are located inside
the unit. The main technical features of the Titan include a robust
high-gain antenna and inductive coupler as standard, a tamperproof
ten watt solar panel, and a handset with an armoured steel
cord. This telephone has been designed to operate in a temperature
range of minus 20 to plus 60 degrees Celsius. With IP65 protection
the new Titan GSM-R is fully weatherproof. It has a standby
time of up to 120 hours and, even in the absence of daylight, can
be operated for up to five hours. It can be remotely configured and
monitored by SMS. An acoustic testing system is available for automatically
checking the handset. It uses standard SIM cards, either
GSM-R or GSM.
