BDZ PP EOOD: Boarding assistance
system for UIC carriages
The Bulgarian company BDZ Passengers EOOD is presenting the
prototype of a new boarding assistance system, known as BAS, at
InnoTrans 2012. It assists people with restricted mobility, the disabled,
older people or travellers with pushchairs or heavy luggage to
board trains. The prototype was created under a project financed
by the EU, “PubTrans4All – Public Transportation Accessibility for
All”. Because there was no vehicle-based BAS for traditional UIC
carriages at the time, the development consortium decided to develop
a suitable boarding assistance system for this type of carriage.
Investment in the installation and technical calculations resulted in
the choice of the swivel-lift concept as the most suitable design for
the limited space available in traditional UIC carriages. The BAS prototype
has been installed in a special UIC carriage by this Bulgarian
company, and can be seen at InnoTrans2012.
Bombardier Transportation: More flexibility on the rails
Bombardier Transportation is using InnoTrans 2012 for the first presentation
of its TRAXX F140 diesel multi-engine locomotive and the
TRAXX AC locomotive with a supplementary diesel engine. The TRAXX
F140 DEME locomotive has been designed for European-wide passenger
and freight operations. The replacement of the single diesel
power unit by four industrial diesel engines offers significant advantages
for users. The locomotive complies with the new, stricter Stage
IIIB exhaust gas emission standards imposed by the EU. Moreover,
compared with a single power unit, fuel consumption, exhaust emissions
and life cycle costs have all been significantly reduced. The
TRAXX AC with Last Mile Diesel gives operators much more operational
flexibility because it eliminates the need to change locomotives
in shunting areas such as stations where there is a transfer from
system to another, terminals, ports or factory premises. As a rule the
final few metres of rail track are not electrified, requiring the use of
shunting locomotives to bridge the gap but, with the introduction of
the new TRAXX AC locomotive, this is no longer necessary.
