FEATURES
Ever since Master Chef exploded on to
our silver screens and transformed home
cooking into an art of dizzying gourmet
heights, the interest in fine dining among
Malaysians has exponentially increased. To
whet the public appetite, intrepid organisers
cooked up the Malaysia International
Gourmet Festival (MIGF) which is now in
its 13th successive year and will take place
throughout October in 31 participating
restaurants.
The Festival’s unwavering focus is on the
skills of the world-class chefs already residing
in Malaysia and the all-year-round quality
of its cuisine and restaurants. This year’s
Festival theme “Cool Chefs - Cooking with
Attitude” means there will be no expletivesdeleted
type of outbursts from Gordon
Ramsey wannabes and the attitude is in the
end product – the ‘cooking’, or the dishes
themselves which exude confidence, style,
chutzpah and pizazz.
Remembering The Ultimate
Sacrifice
Eid al-Adha or “festival of sacrifice”, is an important
religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide
to honour the willingness of the prophet Ibrahim
(Abraham) to sacrifice his young first-born son Ismail
(Ishmael)a as an act of submission to God’s command
and his son’s acceptance to being sacrificed, before
God intervened to provide Abraham with a Lamb to
sacrifice instead. In the lunar Islamic calendar, Eid al-
Adha falls on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah and lasts
for four days.
Through this ultimate act of sacrifice, Abraham had
shown that his love for God superseded all others:
that he would lay down his own life or the lives of
those dearest to him in submission to God’s command.
Muslims commemorate this event every year during
Eid al-Adha where animals are sacrificed in a symbolic
ritual.
The Kaabah, also known as the Sacred House, was constructed by Prophet Abraham
without an opportunity to partake in the sacrificial
meal during these days.
Distributing meat amongst the people, chanting the
Takbir out loud before the Eid prayers on the first
day and after prayers throughout the four days of Eid,
are considered essential parts of this important Islamic
festival. In some countries, families that do not own
livestock can make a contribution to a charity that will
provide meat to those who are in need.
Malaysia is often promoted as a world class
food destination and the Chefs of the Malaysia
International Gourmet Festival epitomize this,
as one can have the opportunity of tasting
the best cuisines, whether they be fine dining
or otherwise, that this country has to offer.
The full list of festival restaurants are available
on this link: http://www.migf.com/restaurantlist/2013
The meat from the sacrificed animal is divided into
three parts. The family retains one third of the share;
another third is given to relatives, friends and neighbors;
and the other third is given to the poor and needy. The
regular charitable practices of the Muslim community
are demonstrated during Eid al-Adha by concerted
efforts to see that no impoverished person is left
Families, neighbours and the community work together to clean, divide and
distribute meat to the poor and needy
DEMPSEY HILL:
Singapore’s Bohemian Enclave
So you think you know your neighbor south of the
border well enough, do you? If you have not visited
Dempsey Hill, then you are yet to discover one of
Singapore’s top lifestyle destinations.
Set amid lush, quiet surroundings that evoke old world
charm, this mini-precinct offers a respite from the city,
and is just a short distance away from Orchard Road.
It boasts a hip cluster of wining and dining establishments,
art galleries, antique furniture stores and weekend
farmers markets.
Dempsey used to be a military stronghold. It was the
site of the British army barracks in colonial times and
the Central Manpower Base of Singapore (CMPB),
where young men reported for military service, in the
early 1970s.
A man-made waterfall greets visitors to the area
Breakfast favorites: pancakes with honey syrup(above) and salmon quiche (below)
The area has undergone a transformation while retaining
the old pre-war buildings and army barracks. Hidden
within conserved colonial black-and-white buildings, you
will see specialty food purveyors and restaurants. Indian
curry houses are situated next to European eateries, local
seafood establishments and premium grocery outlets.
Foodie highlights include European restaurant The White
Rabbit. This airy spot is housed in the former chapel of the
colonial British garrison. It’s a beautifully refurbished space
outfitted with wrought-iron grills, stained-glass windows
and sage-green banquettes.
For your specialty food needs, there is Australian gourmet
store, Jones the Grocer. Pick up the highest quality
chocolate, jams, snacks and extensive array of cheeses
here. Just next to it is the Museum of Contemporary
Arts (MOCA @ Loewen), a contemporary art specialist,
showcasing top works by regional names like Chen Liu
and Fang Lijun.
The spot’s luxury facilities, set in green surrounds, will leave
you feeling nicely refreshed!
THE
MAGIC
Fishing vessels make a picturesque sight
A bold landmark in Marang’s town centre
OF
MARANG
The picturesque Marang village, nestling beneath
the shade of palms, sits on a narrow sand strip
island in the mouth of the Marang river, about
100 meters from the mainland. The houses here
are mainly wooden constructions with corrugated
metal roofs or thatch.
Marang has existed for perhaps more than a hundred years, with
families living here earning their living through catching cuttlefish
and the seasonal prawn fishing. Fishermen traditionally put to
sea in the high prow and stern “Sekuci” fishing boats although
the more modern beamy boats can be found here too.
The fishermen of Marang live a reverse life to the majority of
people: working during the night hours, sleeping during the day.
But the day is a time of intense activity for the other members of
the family on the island when cuttlefish have to washed, cleaned
and dried, using simple tools, and working efficiently on clear
production line principles. Most of the cuttlefish are salted and
dried and stay in good condition, even without refrigeration, for
six months. Others are immediately packed fresh to markets or
hotels, both domestic and abroad as part of the growing export
industry.
You can step into the idyllic setting of the Marang fishing
village by just crossing a wooden bridge right into that more
placid place by the clear waters of both the sea and the
lagoon and experience the warmth of the fishing folk as they
Dried and salted fish is a growing export industry for the villagers of Marang
continue their unhurried way of life. Marang remains one of
the gems of the east coast both in terms of supplying seafood
for inhabitants and tourists while still retaining an unspoiled
picturesque charm. Long may it stay that way!
THE AFTERMATH
The session on Highway Asset Management
touched on several areas of interest including the
need for skilled highway construction workers,
with trends towards increasing mechanization of
construction activities and an overview of 3-D
GIS technology and the future possibility of using
the smart phone as a primary data collection tool
for determining asset condition and supporting
engineering decisions. A discussion on the use of
performance based KPIs for highway maintenance
focused on allowing contractors the opportunity
to reduce costs through innovation and improved
efficiency.
The Panel Session on communicating tolling issues
to the public yielded some excellent suggestions on
how the industry can achieve greater acceptance
of toll highways. Following the example set by India,
the simple re-naming of the word “toll” to become
“User Fee” can create positive connotations while
the Japanese experience of including the public
in all major tolling decisions through a Vox Populi
or “Popular Voice”, provides transparency and an
understanding of the tangible benefits to be enjoyed
in return for the fee
paid.
a gala dinner
Pleased with the outcome of the
conference, PSKLM President and
Organising Chair Dato’ Noorizah
Hj Abd Hamid said that plans are
already underway for the next
PIECE event, due to take place in
Kuala Lumpur in the first quarter of
2015.
Celebrated road safety advocate Kamal Affandi Hashim tries a unique approach to pull in
delegates to his concurrent session featuring JPJ and JKJR
True to its promise of providing insights on the industry’s
challenges and best practices from around the world,
PIECE 2013 ended on a high note with delegates giving the
thumbs up for the three-day destination event.
Country experiences were shared throughout the
conference. The panel of eminent speakers in the first
plenary session unanimously agreed that the greatest
challenge faced by all three countries lies in gaining public
acceptance with regard to the need for toll highways. In
Malaysia, this relates to the effective dispersal of traffic in
order to manage congestion; while in India, it involves
locating the toll collection points away from commuter
routes. The Indonesian Toll Road Authority hopes to
improve project delivery by seeking the government’s
consideration to bear land acquisition costs.
Issues facing the financial sector include the need for
longer tenures to attract investors, and government
support especially in acquiring land. In terms of Foreign
Direct Investment, some of the challenges faced include
competing against opportunities for FDI in other sectors
such as manufacturing, as well as risk distribution between
investors and government.
On the environment, much thought was given to the
development of a Green Highway Index. Once again,
the expectations of road users play a significant role in
deciding on the criteria to be measured. These include
traffic congestion levels and the recycling and use of
waste material generated by highway maintenance and
construction activities.
Road Safety issues centred on the need for the engineering
design of roads to create “forgiving highways” by taking into
account various aspects of human behaviour. Following a
lively debate, it was further agreed that Education and
Enforcement should come together to change those
human behaviours that typically result in high accident rates
and fatalities.
SAFETY TIPS
FUEL
TIPS
SMART SAVING TIPS
Tips to
DECREASE
Your Car’s
Depreciation
COST
SAVING
DRIVE MORE EFFICIENTLY
• Drive Sensibly : Aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration
and braking) wastes fuel. It can lower your fuel mileage by 33
percent at highway speeds and by 5 percent around town.
• Observe the Speed Limit : While each vehicle reaches its
optimal fuel economy at a different speed (or range of
speeds), fuel mileage usually decreases rapidly at speeds
above 80 km/h. Observing the speed limit is also safer.
Depreciation is the difference between the amount you spend
when you buy a car and the amount you could get back when you
sell or trade it in.
Although you can’t prevent your car from depreciating (i.e sell it
for the same price you bought it), you can try minimizing your car
depreciation with these tips:-
?
It takes glass one million
years to decompose,
which means it never
wears out and can be
recycled an infinite
amount of times!
• Remove Excess Weight: Avoid keeping unnecessary items in
your vehicle, especially heavy ones.
• Avoid Excessive Idling: Idling can use a quarter to a half gallon
of fuel per hour, depending on engine size and air conditioner
(AC) use. Turn off your engine when your vehicle is parked.
• Use Cruise Control: Using cruise control on the highway
helps you maintain a constant speed and, in most cases, will
save fuel.
KEEPING YOUR CAR IN SHAPE
• Buy a car with neutral external colours such as black, white and
silver. These colours will most likely still be popular in a couple
of years and will therefore sell for more.
• Buy a car with safety and comfort features such as central
locking, alloy wheels, a CD/MP3 player, navigation equipment,
parking assistance and anti-lock braking system. Useful features
improve resale value.
?
Gold is the only metal that
doesn’t rust, even if it’s
buried in the ground for
thousands of years.
• Keep Your Engine Properly Tuned: Fixing a car that is noticeably
out of tune or has failed an emissions test can improve its
fuel mileage by an average of 4 percent, though results vary
based on the kind of repair and how well it is done.
• Keep Tyres Properly Inflated: You can improve your fuel
mileage by up to 3.3 percent by keeping your tyres inflated
to the proper pressure. Under-inflated tyres can lower fuel
mileage by 0.3 percent for every 1 psi drop in pressure of
all four tyres. Properly inflated tires are safer and last longer.
Extracted from http://www.fueleconomy.gov
• Buy a car that has good fuel economy. With most people
fearing a rise in the price of petrol, they will look for a more
fuel-efficient car.
• Keep your car clean and well serviced. You will get better resale
value if your car is well kept.
• Try keeping your mileage as low as possible, because this will
also increase the resale value of the car.
• Park your car in a garage and consider buying a cover for
protection. A well-maintained car will sell for more.
SAFETY TIPS
WOW BERJAYA KURANGKAN
ADUAN KEGIATAN PENIPUAN
TRAK TUNDA
DAN BENGKEL
SECARA
MENDADAK
Perkhidmatan Bengkel Bergerak ‘Workshop on Wheels’ atau
WOW yang diperkenalkan oleh PLUS hampir setahun lalu berjaya
mengurangkan aduan tentang kegiatan penipuan oleh trak tunda dan
bengkel yang tidak bertanggung jawab.
Pengarah Urusan PLUS, Dato’ Noorizah Hj Abd Hamid berkata,
Sebelum WOW diperkenalkan, PLUS menerima kira-kira 42 aduan
Pusat Kawalan Trafik
4) Pusat Kawalan Trafik menghubungi WOW
