Within walking distance is the Ponte Vecchio or Old
Bridge, spanning the Arno River at its narrowest point.
It is noted for still having shops built along it, as was
once common. Butchers initially occupied the shops but
the powerful Medici Grand Dukes in the 16th century
prohibited them to continue selling there to enforce the
prestige of the bridge. Since then, the tenants have been
jewelers, art dealers and souvenir sellers.
Florence:
Disneyland of the
Renaissance
Known as the cradle of the
Renaissance, Florence is a
culture-rich city in the heart
of Tuscany, Italy. Its skyline
is punctuated by the iconic
rooftops of historic buildings.
In fact, Florence contains a
quarter of the planet’s UNESCO
world heritage sites, which can
be overwhelming for first-time
visitors!
Over the centuries, it has been home
to Renaissance masters Leonardo
da Vinci, Giotto, Michelangelo,
Dante and Brunelleschi, who have
left their legacy in a trove of art
and architecture that is world
renowned.
It is this rich legacy that inspires
art-lovers to visit, and museums
and galleries are everywhere.
Reminders of Michelangelo’s
famous statue of David are also
imprinted on tourist merchandise,
sometimes done tongue-in-cheek!
Florence’s pride must surely be the
cathedral, The Duomo (Piazza del
Duomo), whose teracotta-andwhite
dome dominates the city’s
skyline. The building’s ornate facade
is decorated in pink, white and
green marble. By night, it looks like
a huge stage prop, or paper etching!
Michelangelo’s famous Statue of David stands
guard over the city
Another must see is the Santa Maria Novella pharmacy
where the city’s best scents are made. Started in the 16th
century by Dominican friars, this is more like a museum
than a perfume shop since it stocks an awesome range
of perfumes, herbal elixirs and soaps based on, of all
things, vinegar!
As Florence has entered the top 50 fashion capitals of
the world and is home to Gucci, Ferragamo, Cavalli and
Puci, a visit to this city would not be complete without
taking at least one luxury item home. For factory outlet
bargains, The Mall is the most famous shopping outlet in
Tuscany and one of the first ones to open in the region.
Here, you can go shopping at Gucci, Ferragamo, Cavalli,
Armani, Valentino and Tod’s for the Italian houses. Among
the international fashion designers, there is Alexander
McQueen, Burberry, Stella McCartney and Yves Saint
Laurent and much more. At Space, only clothing and
accessories by Prada and its other labels such as Miu
Miu are found. The Space is open only to those with
numbers that you get when you walk in - since there
are only about 100 given out per day, you want to make
sure to get there early in the day.
Alternatively, you can just visit the Museo Gucci in the
heart of Florence. Housed in a 14th-century building
in the Piazza della Signoria, the museum is designed to
honor the company’s leather goods legacy. There is also
an internet-friendly café and a bookshop housed in the
building.
Getting there:
Fly MAS to Amsterdam and from there, catch
the many daily connecting flights to Florence.
Best time to travel:
October/November (fewer tourists!)
Note:
Florence airport check-in staff strictly enforces the
20kg baggage allowance and 12kg carry-ons so
make sure your bags are not overweight.
The villagers took the old man’s advice and the Nian was
conquered. On the anniversary of the date, the Chinese
recognize the “passing of the Nian” which is also synonymous
with celebrating the new year.
The date of Chinese New Year changes each year as it is
based on the lunar calendar. Because Japan, Korea, Mongolia,
Tibet and Vietnam also celebrate the new year based on the
Chinese lunisolar calendar, the preferred and politically correct
greeting these days would be “Happy Lunar New Year”.
The new Moon on January 31 begins the year of the Wood Horse, a time of fast victories,
unexpected adventure, and surprising romance. According to astrologists and feng shui experts,
it is an excellent year for travel. Energy is high and production is rewarded. Decisive action, not
procrastination, brings victory. But you have to act fast in a Horse year. Events move so quickly in
a Horse year that you don’t want to gallop off in the wrong direction.
Chinese New Year is rooted in much a celebration of
spring just like Easter or Passover. The New Year was
likely the start of preparations for a new growing
season. However, according to legend, the Chinese
New Year celebration started out of fear.
On this day, families travel long distances to meet and make
merry. The reunion feast on New Year’s Eveis a time of family
bonding and a tradition not to be missed. Some families may
invite a lion dance troupe as a symbolic ritual to usher in the
Chinese New Year as well as to evict bad spirits from the
premises. Members of the family who are married also give
red packets containing cash known as lai see or angpow, a
form of blessings and to suppress the aging and challenges
associated with the coming year, to junior members of the
family, mostly children and teenagers.
The Chinese New Year festivities last for 15 days, ending
with Chap Goh Mei. In Malaysia and Singapore, this day is
celebrated by individuals seeking for a love partner, where
single women would write their contact number on mandarin
oranges and throw it in a river or a lake while single men would
collect them and eat the oranges. The taste is an indication of
their possible love: sweet represents a good fate while sour
represents a bad fate.
Angpow is a form of blessings
Wearing red wards off evil and brings good luck
It tells a story of a terrible mythical monster who
preyed on villagers. The lion-like monster’s name
was Nian which is also the Chinese word for “year.”
A wise old man counsels the villagers to ward off
the evil Nian by making loud noises with drums
and firecrackers and hanging red paper cutouts and
scrolls on their doors because for some reason, the
Nian is scared of the color red.
Creative kite designs
BRIEF HISTORY
OF THE KITE
The kite is something children all
over the world play with. But how,
and where, was the kite invented?
And was it always a toy?
The generally accepted wisdom is
that the kite was invented in China
as there is written evidence about
kites in ancient tomes. However
it is also known that people in the
South Sea Islands have used kites for
fishing since very early times. They
would attach bait to the tail of the
kite together with a sort of net to
catch the fish. This technique is still in
use today.
Others believe it could have been
independently invented by the
Malaysians or Indonesians who first
made kites from leaves and also have
a very long history of kite flying.
Somewhere between 770 BC and
221 BC large wooden kites called
muyuan were invented in China for
military purposes. Besides spying
on enemy positions, kites were
sometimes used to deliver urgent
messages.
During this time too, all kinds of
people discovered the simple
enjoyment of kite flying. Later in the
history of kites, people came up with
more designs and new ideas, such as
the musical kite. Kites were unknown
in Europe for centuries until Marco
Polo brought them back from his
travels to the East. Then Europeans,
and later, Americans used kites for
all kinds of scientific and military
purposes.
The silk route was also thought
to be responsible for spreading
kites into Arabia and North Africa.
Portuguese traders and the Dutch
East India Company were thought to
be responsible for introducing kites
into Europe; other theories suggests
that Ghengiz Khan and his Mongolian
warriors brought kites with them
when they invaded and ruled most
of central
Europe and
Asia.
KITES!
An annual event featuring the cultural, sporting
and recreational activity of kite-flying, the World Kite Festival is
a definite crowd-puller enjoyed by people of all ages spread across
varying societies.
This year’s event, slated to take place from 19 to
23 February at Bukit Layang-Layang in Pasir Gudang,
Johor, will see the global participation of more than
30 countries.
Kite-flying is a recreation sport that enhances
friendships with participants both young and old,
having enough common ground to break the iceand
carry on long discussions about their shared passion.
They will be vying for the title in five categories
including “The Most Creative Kite”, “The
Most Harmonious Kite Decor”, “The
Dragon Kitie”, “The Train Kite” and
“Rokkaku Challenge”.
From a modest start in 1995 with just 11 foreign
participants coming from 5 countries, the World Kite
Festival has grown significantly throughout time as
well as attracting local visitors to the event.
For this year’s edition, the organisers have lined up
several activities throughout the five-day event which
will include kite exhibitions, kite competitions, kite
making workshops as well as cultural events.
A unique event called “Lolly Pop Drop” was part of
last year’s festival where children will collect candies
dropping from the air. Another highlight of the festival
was night flying with LED kite showcase. The event was
one of the most anticipated events to be introduced
last year and will see its return this year too.
Night flying is not to be missed by stargazers or
photographers who wish to capture the beauty of
these illuminated kites. Kite-flyers compete individually
in local or international categories for the most
creative LED kites. Last year, kite-flyers displayed their
creativity by arranging neon-coloured lights along the
frames of their kites. The most interesting kites were
shaped like flowers, insects, logos and other objects.
Legacy of the Portuguese : A Famosa
Convenient walkways along the Malacca River
MALACCA:
WHERE IT
ALL BEGAN
By: Norshazmira Fazlyna Mohamad Murat
Strolling along the alleys of Malacca city one will definitely be
amazed at the distinctive legacy of its past. At various points
over several decades, this historic state has been ruled
by Sultans, the Portuguese, Dutch, British, and Japanese.
Being ruled by different autocratic powers, Malacca can be
described as a melting pot of cultures which began in 1400
with a prince from Palembang. Parameswara was resting
with his small band of followers at the mouth of the Bertam
River when he saw a white mouse-deer kicking one of his
hunting dogs. Impressed with the deer’s bold movement, he
took the incident as an auspicious sign for a city to be built
at the very spot. The origin of the name Malacca came from
the tree under which Parameswara was resting.
oldest surviving European architectural remains in Asia. The
name of Alfonso de Albuquerque is synonymous to the
fortress, as he originally constructed it as a form of massive
fortification of the Portuguese Empire from Dutch invasion.
A Famosa faced severe damages from the Dutch attack
and but has survived over the years, although now only the
lone whitewashed gatehouse of Porta de Santiago remains,
located downhill from St Paul’s Church.
Rich with historical monuments, Malacca offers tourists an
informative engagement with the past, as there are many
museums around the state, including the famous Samudera
Ship Museum. The city itself is filled with buildings that
embrace varied architectural styles. One of the most defining
structures is the Christ Church or better known as Stadthuys,
the Brick-Red Building. The unique feature of this building is
further emphasized by the colourful groups of trishaws in the
compound, all ready to peddle foreigners and locals alike. The
trishaws are heavily decorated with ornaments and lights, not
to mention blaring speakers.
Another novel way of experiencing the city’s attractions is
by taking a River Boat Cruise along the Malacca River. Once
dubbed the ‘Venice of the East’, the river boat will cruise up
the shallow Malacca River to Kampung Morten, a distance of
about 10 km and takes 45 minutes to 1 hour. As you cruise
further up the river, you will be able to see old shop houses on
the left and right banks, a testimony of its heydays as a bustling
trading port.
One can easily find mosques, temples and churches within
a stone’s throw of each other. Malacca is also home to the
Baba Nyonya Peranakan, descendants of Chinese Immigrants
from the 15th century who married locals and brought forth
a unique culture and way of life which is essentially a mixture
of both Malay and Chinese heritage. In the south of Malacca,
there is also a Portuguese settlement where the community
speaks Kristang, a mix of old Portuguese and Malay.
Also not be missed is the Jonker Street Night Market. Located
along Jalan Hang Jebat, it is the weekly night market, where
you would find Malays, Indians, Chinese and foreigners filling
the streets, in search of unique crafts, local wares and antiques.
Boat cruises ply the waterways
Located midway along the straits linking China to India and
the Near East, Malacca was perfectly established as a center
for maritime trade, where it grew rapidly and became a
bustling cosmopolitan port. The strategic point of Malacca
to the Spice Islands attracted many maritime powers.
Numerous battles have taken place in this small state, and
one of its most famous ruins is the A Famosa. Built during
the Portuguese Era in 1511, the A Famosa is one of the
A not-to-be-missed night market
Against such a colorful background of cultures, one would be
right to expect an equally interesting array of food choices.
Indeed, Malacca is famous for its Assam Pedas and Baba-
Nyonya cuisine, in particular the traditional chendol dessert
– made with Coconut milk, jelly noodles, shaved ice and palm
sugar.
Clockwise from above :
PERSIMPANGAN BERTINGKAT
SUNGAI BUAYA ATASI MASALAH
PENDUDUK SEKITAR
PLUS NEWS
Persimpangan Bukit Gambir pacu
Pembangunan kawasan sekitar
terlerai apabila Persimpangan Bertingkat Sungai Buaya
dibuka secara rasminya oleh Perdana Menteri Malaysia,
YAB Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak, 9 Januari
lalu.
Menurut Noorizah, kerja-kerja pembinaan persimpangan
yang bernilai RM87 juta ini bermula pada pertengahan
2011 dan siap sepenuhnya pada Oktober 2013.
Persimpangan Bertingkat Sungai Buaya terletak di
KM434.7 di Lebuhraya Utara-Selatan, iaitu di antara
Persimpangan Bertingkat Rawang dan Persimpangan
Bertingkat Bukit Beruntung. Ia merupakan strategi
Kerajaan dan PLUS untuk membangunkan kawasan
Hulu Selangor untuk faedah masyarakat setempat.
“Persimpangan Bertingkat sepanjang 1.5 kilometer ini
dilengkapi dengan sebuah plaza tol berkapasiti 8 lorong
(termasuk lorong elektronik), surau, tandas awam,
wakaf, kawasan meletak kenderaan dan lain-lain untuk
memberi lebih keselesaan kepada orang ramai,” kata
Noorizah.
Perdana Menteri memalu gendang sebagai simbolik pembukaan Persimpangan
Bertingkat Sungai Buaya
Menurut Pengarah Urusan PLUS Malaysia Berhad
(PLUS), Dato’ Noorizah Hj Abd Hamid, “Persimpangan
Bertingkat Sungai Buaya dijangka dapat mengatasi
masalah kesesakan lalulintas di sepanjang Jalan B27
berhampiran bandar Rawang.”
kira-kira 40 hingga 60 minit.
Beliau berkata demikian pada Majlis Pembukaan Rasmi
Persimpangan Bertingkat Sungai Buaya oleh Perdana
Menteri Malaysia, hari ini. Turut hadir ialah Menteri Kerja
Raya, YB Datuk Hj Fadilah Hj Yusof.
kerja-kerja pembinaan Persimpangan Bertingkat
Seremban baru serta Persimpangan Bertingkat Alor
Pongsu di Perak.
Persimpangan Bertingkat Bukit Gambir di Lebuhraya Utara-
Selatan yang dirasmi oleh Timbalan Perdana Menteri, Tan
Sri Muhyiddin Yassin pada 25 Januari lalu dijangka memacu
perkembangan ekonomi di Bukit Gambir dan kawasan
sekitarnya.
Pembukaan persimpangan bertingkat ini bukan sahaja
memberi manfaat kepada kira-kira 25,000 penduduk sekitar,
malah dilihat sebagai pemangkin kepada pembangunan
penduduk setempat menerusi laluan eksklusif dan lebih
mudah ke Lebuhraya Utara-Selatan di KM156.7.
Pengarah Urusan PLUS Malaysia Berhad (PLUS), Dato’
Noorizah Hj Abd Hamid berkata, “Persimpangan Bertingkat
orang ramai,” tambah Noorizah.
PLUS: Travel Time Advisory crucial in
Promoting Smoother and Safe Travel
PLUS urges the public to plan their balik kampongs travel
for Chinese New Year holidays based on its’ Travel Time
Advisory (TTA) which is proven to have contributed to
smoother traffic flow during peak periods in the past.
“The TTA plays a crucial role in helping the public to
plan their journey whereby PLUS expects the traffic on
the North-South Expressway will increase by 25 percent
to 1.5 million vehicles per day during the Chinese New
Year holidays compared to 1.2 million vehicles on normal
days,” said PLUS Managing Director/Chief Executive
Officer, Dato’ Noorizah Hj Abd Hamid.
The TTA consists of recommended staggered travel
times for various destinations from the Klang Valley to
major states and cities in Kedah, Perlis, Penang, Perak,
Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Johor and Singapore. It is aimed
at distributing traffic and reducing congestion on the
mainline, major toll plazas, rest areas and lay-bys during
peak periods.
“We expect those in the Klang Valley to start leaving for
their kampongs beginning from 29 January to 31 January
CUTI PERAYAAN TAHUN BARU CINA:
PLUS JANGKA TRAFIK MENINGKAT 25 PERATUS BERBANDING HARI BIASA
mengeluarkan Jadual Cadangan Waktu Perjalanan (TTA)
bagi membantu orang ramai merancang perjalanan
(Wednesday-Friday). Meanwhile, we expect the journey
back to the Klang Valley in staggered starting from 1
February to 9 February.” Noorizah elaborated.
Noorizah was quoted at a media briefing to highlight the
TTA and other preparations that will be taken by PLUS
in coping with the traffic increase at Persada PLUS today.
According to Noorizah, more that 50 percent of the total
highway users during last Chinese New Year holidays
followed the TTA and it has helped to reduce traffic
congestion on the North-South Expressway.
“The high adoption rate of the TTA during the previous
festive seasons helped to promote smoother and safer
travel on the highways. As such, we hope that the public
will continue to give their co-operation in following
the TTA for their balik kampong as well as during their
journey back to the Klang Valley,” Noorizah said.
”We also advise the public to plan their journey and call
the toll free PLUSLine at 1800 88 0000 for the latest
traffic update,” Noorizah added.
mereka.
Only Electronic Toll
Transaction At Kempas And
Perling Toll Plazas
All toll transactions at the Kempas Toll Plaza
(on the North-South Expressway) and the
Perling Toll Plaza (on Linkedua) are conducted
electronically since 11 January 2014.
The implementation of electronic toll transaction at both
toll plazas is a continuation of the same initiative at Linkedua.
It is also part of the company’s strategies to promote faster,
easier and smoother transactions at toll plazas.
As such, PLUS is offering a 10 percent toll rebate to Class
1 vehicle users who pay toll electronically via PLUSMiles,
Touch ‘n Go cards or SmartTAG at the Kempas and Perling
toll plazas for 3 months beginning 11 January until 10 April
2014.
Additionally, highway users are also able to purchase
preloaded RM5 PLUSMiles and Touch ‘n Go cards at a
promotional rate of RM5 at both toll plazas beginning 1
January until 31 January 2014.
The cards (with a preloaded value of RM5) can also be
purchased a special rate of RM10 after 31 January 2014.
As such, we advise the public utilizing the Kempas and
Perling toll plazas to purchase these cards to enjoy the toll
rebate and smoother toll transactions at both plazas.
Debris On Highway: Users
Cooperation Needed
PLUS views safety issues
on our highways seriously.
As such, we have been
collaborating with the
media to highlight, share and
educate the public on various
initiatives and measures taken
by the company to improve
safety such as immediate
clearance of debris on the
highways by our patrolling
teams, installation of CCTV
cameras at selected locations
on the highways for traffic
and highway monitoring
purposes, collaboration with
the police and various road
safety agencies and so on.
Additionally, PLUS also
continuously organizes
various road safety campaigns
and programmes to educate
highway users over the years.
The Malaysians Unite For
Road Safety (MUFORS)
initiative, spearheaded by
PLUS, urges the public to
play their roles in making
the road safer for all. Under
the MUFORS banner, we
also conducted Respect
Your Limits safety seminars
for heavy vehicle drivers all
across the country, stressing
the need to respect the
limitations of the vehicles
and the drivers themselves.
Our other campaigns and
programmes are tailored
to suit the target audiences
such as young motorcyclists,
university students, secondary
school students and so on.
PLUS will not compromise
on the safety of highway
users and will take all possible
measures to help highway
users enjoy smoother, safer
and more convenient travel
on its expressways.
Simultaneously, PLUS also
urges highway users to also
play their roles to promote
safety on the highways.
Heavy vehicle drivers, owners
and operators must always
ensure that they have secured
their consignments properly
before entering the highways.
Loose consignments, as well
as overloading, compromise
the safety of other highway
users as they tend to fall off
on the road at any time.
PLUS also advises heavy
vehicle operators and
owners to also use better
quality retreaded tyres for
their fleets. Based on our
observation and record, tyre
fragments from vehicles using
low graded retreaded tyres
are the most common debris
on the highways and they
pose a threat to other users,
especially motorcyclists and
drivers of small vehicles.
PLUS also seeks cooperation
from the public to contact
the toll-free PLUSLine 1800
88 0000 should they see any
debris on the highways for
immediate clearance.
Preparing for Your Balik Kampung Drive
With CNY round the corner, it’s again time to plan for
the long trip back to our hometowns. As for those not
celebrating this festive occasion, the holidays is also a
great opportunity to visit places to let down our hair
and recharge ourselves. But before setting off, there are a
couple of checks and preparations for the vehicle.
1. Vital fluids
This includes the engine oil, transmission oil, brake oil,
radiator coolant, spare tank coolant, battery fluid and
windscreen washer fluid. Top up if they are insufficient
and fix any leaks in the system.
2. Service your vehicle if the next service
interval is near
Not only will this minimize chances of premature
failure of the parts due, it is also possible for the service
personnel to inspect the overall condition of your vehicle.
Apart from the regular mechanics and authorized service
centers, Puspakom has also joined the bandwagon by
offering free inspection prior to the holidays.
3. Lights and electrics
If you have a burnt bulb that’s yet to be replaced, now is
the time to get it done. In fact, it is a good idea to spare a
headlamp, signal and rear lamp bulb especially when one
is not familiar with the destination area.
4. Windshield Wipers
Each wipe should be clean with minimal amount of
leftover water droplets. Do consider cleaning them from
grime and oil regularly.
5. Check all wheels, the spare and tire
replacement tools
Ensure air pressure is sufficient as a deflated tire will not
only sacrifice grip but also affect fuel consumption due
to increased rolling resistance. Have the wheels balanced
and aligned if a wobbling or straying steering is felt.
6. Have a copy of your vehicle insurance
policy cover
This was advised by a friend handling vehicle damage
claims. If the inevitable really happens, this cover could help
clear a lot of doubts and provide important information.
7. Get enough rest prior to the drive
Insufficient rest can easily lead to of loss of concentration.
Taking turns to drive along the way is also an option
particularly on highways with simple road signs and
minimal distractions.
1. Berjalan
Jika cuaca elok, berjalan di sekitar rumah sambil lihat
pemandangan sekeliling memang menyeronokkan. Jika
lagi). Ini boleh menguatkan kaki dan lutut. Jika tiada tangga?
Berjalan sahaja keliling dalam rumah, walaupun kurang
seronok, tetapi masih berkesan
2. Mood uplifting
6. Jogging in place/ joging setempat
pemegang) pencuci lantai cecair saiz besar.
8. Menari
Senaman yang menyeronokkan. Bahkan boleh meningkatkan emosi/ semangat juga.
9. Squats
10. Step exercises/ Berjalan setempat
Senaman naik turun satu anak tangga. Boleh kuatkan otot kaki. Pastikan jangan tergelincir semasa melakukan senanam ini. Jika rasa
kurang seronok, buatlah apa-apa gaya aerobik juga, asalkan naik turun terjadi.
Tips to save fuel
while you drive
Thinking about how you can better your car’s fuel
consumption? Here are four simple tips to get you
on your way to getting more out of your petrol and
pennies!
1. Regularly check your tyre pressure
Keeping your tyres inflated is one of the most crucial
things you should know for a better fuel consumption.
Under-inflated tyres have more rolling resistance
which means you need to burn more gas to keep your
car moving. This will not only contribute to pollution,
but will also increase fuel costs. Under-inflated tyres
also make for longer stopping distances and can be
very dangerous as they will have a higher tendency
to skid on wet surfaces.
Pakai tali keledar
Pandu dengan
berhemah pada setiap
masa
MAKLUMAT TRAFIK
TERKINI
setiap hari
2. Slow down
Did you know that speeding will add a surprising
amount to your fuel cost? Maintain a steady speed
using the highest gear possible. The most efficient
speed is typically around 45- 50mph. Driving faster
than this will greatly increase your fuel consumption.
Try to stick to the speed limit and do not go over
or under it. Driving slower, braking earlier and
accelerating slowly will not only make you safer on
the road, but it will also save you money.
3. Cut down the usage of air-conditioners
It is undeniable that some countries like Malaysia,
with low air humidity, it is oven-like to drive without
having to turn on the air conditioners especially
during hot weathers. The solution is easy. Use it only
when you need it. For example, morning and night
time have higher air humidity, which means the
air temperature outside is more cooling than the
temperature inside your car. So you can turn off the
air-conditioner, roll down your window and enjoy the
cool fresh air outside. By doing this, you are not only
doing yourself a favour, but Mother Earth as well!
4. Travel light
Take some time to clean up and remove any excess
t items that are not necessary inside your car. This
will be helpful especially on hill slopes where you will
need to press for more gas to gain a steady speed.
By travelling light, you will also be helping protect
the environment, as the less fuel you burn, the fewer
emissions your car will produce.
