Appendix 4: The parks’ pr<strong>of</strong>ile<br />

This short pr<strong>of</strong>ile <strong>of</strong> the parks is useful for parks’ managers, designers, city planners do<br />

better <strong>their</strong> works; serve the best population’s demand for parks.<br />

Bách Thảo park (PHUC 2009: 421-423) is located right after the Ho Chi Minh museum,<br />

on the area <strong>of</strong> 20 ha, with two 2 entrances: on is on Hoang Hoa Tham street, the other is on<br />

Ngoc Ha street.<br />

1890, the French chased the native population away, built up a garden, planting, raising<br />

revenue, known as the herb garden (Jardin Boetanique). The local called as Hoang Hoa<br />

camp or the Botanic Garden.<br />

During the World War II (1939-1945), in the garden bred birds were dying. They were not<br />

well taken care <strong>of</strong>. Finally, the French moved to on Sai Gon zoo in the south <strong>of</strong> Vietnam.<br />

After librating the Hanoi capital, the garden was reconstructed and called Bach Thao Park.<br />

In the northwestern corner <strong>of</strong> the park, there is a small hill, called Khan mountain or<br />

mountain Nung. At the peaks <strong>of</strong> the hill, there is also an ancient temple to respect an<br />

honour, Huyen Thien Hac De, a boy that a legend has the help <strong>of</strong> King Ly won invaders.<br />

Hoan Kiem Lake (AQUINO 2013) means "Lake <strong>of</strong> the Returned Sword" or "Lake <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Restored Sword", also known as Hồ Gươm - Sword Lake) is a lake in the historical center<br />

<strong>of</strong> Hanoi, the capital city <strong>of</strong> Vietnam. The lake is one <strong>of</strong> the major scenic spots in the city<br />

and serves as a focal point for its public life.<br />

The sidewalks around the lake are shaded by trees, so the short walk (less than ten minutes)<br />

it may take you to walk from one end <strong>of</strong> the elongated lake to the other is bound to be<br />

pleasant even in sunny weather.<br />

Lenin Park (PHUC 2009: 119<strong>–</strong>121) belongs to Ba Dinh district and located in the cross <strong>of</strong><br />

three streets: Tran Phu, Hoang Dieu and Dien Bien Phu.<br />

It is first named to commemorate the victory against the Minh invaders (China) 10/10/1427<br />

in Chi Lang border gate (Lang Son, Vietnam). So it was named Chi Lang ‘park’.<br />

The Chi Lang ‘park’ has had a lake. The lake was a place where soldier gave <strong>their</strong><br />

elephants shower, so-called Elephant lake.<br />

In the French invasion, after destroying the Hanoi rampart (1894-1897), the colonial city<br />

was planned again. The French filled up the lake and constructed the park.<br />

Because in the corner side Hoang Dieu street, the park had a status <strong>of</strong> four classes in the<br />

society, so the park was named so “Vuon hoa Canh Nong” or Farmer Garden.<br />

In 1982, aspired by the honour Lenin, the Communist Party <strong>of</strong> Vietnam Central decided to<br />

build here Lenin statue with the help <strong>of</strong> the Soviet Union.<br />
