The nuns of the town’s Conceptionist Convent were the authors of the texts that were set by native church musicians – from Quito – for various church feasts. A few of the names of the composers whose works are included in the collection have been transmitted to us – among them, Manuel Blasco and Joseph Hortuño – but most of the works are of anonymous authorship. Viewed stylistically, the spectrum ranges from the anonymous Oygan que da with the sound of Renaissance music to Hortuño’s baroque Vamos todos a ver. The repertoire selection also contains three examples from another Ecuadorian collection, probably from the eighteenth or nineteenth century, “Dedicated to Maestro Ascencio Pauta in Loja”. It consists of popular villancicos, simple and enchanting melodies that had their place in nativity plays and finely reflect Ecuador’s diverse ethnic makeup. The bomba El Negro José (The Black Joseph), from the old Afro-Ecuadorian popular dance tradition, is the seamless fusion of Indian melody, African rhythm, and the European formal structure of strophe-refrain-strophe. The melody Curi muyito was documented in the eighteenth century. The Quechua term Curi muyito means “golden seed”, that is, the ripe maize kernel, a metaphor employed by the Indians for the Christ child. Efter 18 års turnéverksamhet i 30 länder är ensemblen fortfarande ensam om att representera Norden på detta område. På merit listan finns dessutom sex CD-utgivningar, en grammisnominering, ett interpretationspris samt inspelningar i radio och TV, både i Sverige och utomlands. Kombinationen av färgstark, rytmisk tidig latinamerikansk repertoar och en vokalinstrumental ensemble skolad i svensk tradition har resulterat i världsrykte och en ledande position inom genren. Ensemblens klara, homogena klang och de lidelsefulla, rytmiska tolkningarna har vunnit stor genklang. Peter Pontvik, född i Köpenhamn 1963, är utbildad i komposition, musikvetenskap, sång och körledning i Sverige, Uruguay och Tyskland. Han har skrivit kammarmusik samt kör- och orkesterverk och har även forskat inom tidig musik. 1995 grundade han Ensemble Villancico. Han är initiativtagare till Stockholm Early Music Festival, ordförande i den nordiska organisationen NORDEM och det europeiska nätverket REMA. Han har fått ut märkelserna “Årets Eldsjäl 2004” av Svenska musik festivaler och “Swedish Early Music Award 2010”. 52

The interpretive vitality and firstrank musical capabilities of the ensemble have earned it worldwide renown. The ensemble has performed internationally on television and radio on repeated occasions and has released six CDs. In 2001 the ensemble received the Ivan Lucacic Prize in Croatia, and in 2003 the CD “Hyhyhy – the New Jungle Book of the Baroque” was nominated for the Swedish Grammis Recording Prize. Born in Copenhagen in 1963, peter pontvik has studied composition, musicology, singing, and choral conducting in Sweden, Uruguay, and Germany. His compositions include chamber music as well as works for choir and orchestra. He has devoted himself in special measure to research in the field of Latin American baroque music. He founded the Ensemble Villancico in 1995 and serves as its artistic director. He founded the Stockholm Early Music Festival and is the president of REMA (European Early Music Network), and NORDEM (Nordic Early Music Federation). He received the award Cultural Promoter of the Year from the Swedish Festival Association in 2004, and the Swedish Early Music Award in 2010.
