The Songs of Solomon focuses on the works of the Jewish renaissance
composer Salomone Rossi, highlighting his multifaceted artistry, as
court composer to the Gonzaga family, and as a unique renewer of the
devotional music of the synagogue. Although the work of Monteverdi,
Rossi’s contemporary and colleague, may be incomparable, Rossi’s
madrigals too display grace and refinement and represent a major milestone
in the history of music. His first book of madrigals, for instance,
contains the first printed tabulature for chitarrone (theorbo). Rossi
also published revolutionising polyphonic settings of Hebrew prayers
and psalms. The collection Hashirim asher li’Shlomo was printed in
Venice in 1622–1623. Different than most Hebrew com posers, who
were known for their simple elegance, Rossi sometimes used madrigal
elements to underline emotions in his sacred compositions. Since the
beginning, Rossi’s music has played an important part for the ensemble

Profeti della Quinta bildades av bassångaren och cembalisten
Elam Rotem i regionen Galileen i Israel. Ensemblen har för närvarande
sitt säte i Schweiz, där medlemmarna studerar vid Schola
Cantorum Basiliensis och specialiserar sig på italiensk musik från
renässans och barock. I sitt program- och forskningsarbete
lyfter Profeti della Quinta ofta fram sällan framförd repertoar,
som Emilio del Cavalieris Lamentationes eller Rossis Hashirim
asher li’Shlomo, som de också har spelat in. 2012 deltog de i
doku mentären ”The Search for Salomone Rossi” som spelades
in i Mantua. Ensemblen har framträtt bland annat vid Festival
Oude Muziek Utrecht och utsågs sommaren 2011 till vinnare av
York Young Artists’ Early Music Competition.
profeti della Quinta was formed by bass singer and harpsichordist
Elam Rotem in the region of Galilee in Israel. The ensemble currently
has its seat in Switzerland, where the members are studing at the Schola
Cantorum in Basel, specialising in Italian renaissance and baroque
music. In their programming and research, Profeti della Quinta
often focuses on rarely performed repertoire, like the Lamentations of
Emilio del Cavalieri or the Hashirim asher li’Shlomo by Rossi, which
they have also recorded. In 2012, they were part of a documentary
filmed in Mantua, ”The Search for Salomone Rossi”. The ensemble
has appeared at for instance the Utrecht Early Music Festival and
was awarded first prize in the York Young Artists’ Early Music
Competition in the summer of 2011.
