the morning of 11 September 2001, the ensemble was about to start a
day of recording at a monastery in California. Mainte chancon ai fait,
a love song to the Virgin Mary, was the first song recorded when work
resumed after the news of what had happened in New York.
The contemporary pieces in tonight’s programme are also meetings
between new and old. David Lang’s the wood and the vine is based on
the texts of the 12th century poet Marie de France. Richard Einhorn’s
The Scientist consists of the single sentence which Galileo supposedly
murmured after he was forced by Church authorities to deny that the
Earth travels around the Sun: “Eppur si muove – and yet it moves!”
The programme is rounded off by songs from two programmes exploring
American musical traditions, shape note tunes and gospel
songs. The concert closes with a song of parting friends, with a text of
unknown origin.

En eftermiddag våren 1986 samlades fyra kvinnor samlades för
att höra hur medeltida liturgisk sång och polyfoni skulle låta med
kvinnoröster. Tjugofem år senare har Anonymous 4 framträtt
för utsålda hus i konsertserier och på festivaler i Nordamerika,
Europa, Asien och Mellanöstern. De har även givit ut 19 inspelningar,
med över två miljoner sålda exemplar.
Ensemblens program har innehållit musik från år 1000,
1100-tals abbedissan och mystikern Hildegard av Bingens extatis
ka musik och poesi, liturgiska sånger och flerstämmighet
från 1200- och 1300-talets England, Frankrike och Spanien,
medeltida och moderna julsånger från de brittiska öarna, amerikanska
folksånger, shape note-sånger (en andlig sång tradition
från USA som ut vecklades under 1700- och 1800-talet) och
gospellåtar, samt musik som specialkomponerats för ensemblen.
Deras inspelningar har fått det prestigefyllda franska priset
Diapason d’Or, ”Årets skiva” av Classic CD, och Classic FM’s
”Årets tidiga musik-inspelning”. De har erhållit det italienska
Antonio Vivaldi-priset och tilldelats Le Monde de la Musique’s
utmärkelse Choc, och flera gånger utsetts till ”Redaktörens val”
i brittiska Gramophone. För Anonymous 4 har bland andra John
Tavener, Peter Maxwell Davies och Steve Reich komponerat nya
verk. Ensemblen har också turnerat med Chilingirian String
Quartet och med harpisten Andrew Lawrence King.
Four women got together for a music reading session one afternoon
in the spring of 1986; they wanted to hear what medieval chant and
polyphony would sound like when sung by female voices. Twenty-five
years later, anonymous 4 has performed for sold-out audiences on
major concert series and at festivals throughout North America,
Europe, Asia, and the Middle East; and has made 19 recordings,
selling over two million copies.
Anonymous 4’s programs have included music from the year 1000;
the ecstatic music and poetry of the 12th-century abbess and mystic,
Hildegard of Bingen; 13th- and 14th-century chant and polyphony
from England, France, and Spain; medieval and modern carols from
the British Isles; American folksongs, shape note tunes, and gospel
songs; and works newly written for the group. Their recordings have
received France’s prestigious Diapason d’Or, Classic CD’s Disc of the
Year, Classic FM’s Early Music Recording of the Year, several Gramophone
Editor’s Choice awards, Italy’s Antonio Vivaldi Award, and
Le Monde de la Musique’s Choc award. Composers who have written
for Anonymous 4 include John Tavener, Peter Maxwell Davies, and
Steve Reich. The ensemble has also toured with among others the
Chilingirian String Quartet and harpist Andrew Lawrence King.
