Marco Mencoboni is a harpsichordist and organist, born in 1961 in
Macerata, Italy. Having studied with among others Ton Koopman
and Gustav Leonhardt, today he is frequently invited to appear at
international festivals for early music as a soloist and director of the
ensemble Cantar Lontano. Since 1999, he is also the director of the
Cantar Lontano festival, held every year in the Ancona province.
Mencoboni has dedicated many years to the rediscovery and
performance of unknown baroque and renaissance repertoire, and
has worked to revive the forgotten regional tradition of cantar lontano.
The praxis is realised by the strategical placing of singers in
the space of a church to create a spectacular surround sound effect.
His latest project, the Canalgrande Adriatic Baroque Orchestra,
brings together musicians of Italian, Greek, Croatian, Slovenian,
and Albanian origins.
The element of early music in unexpected places has characterised
Mencoboni’s work in recent years, leading him for instance to perform
renaissance pieces with voices and the horns of seven ships in the port
of Ancona!
