role in the resurgence of interest in 17th and 18th century music in
France, a repertoire which had up until then been neglected, but is
now widely performed and admired. Since the 1987 production of
Lully’s Atys at the Opéra Comique in Paris, triumphantly revived in
May 2011, it has been in the field of opera that Les Arts Florissants
have enjoyed their greatest successes. Notable productions include
works by Rameau, Charpentier, Handel, Purcell, Mozart, and
Monte verdi, where they have collaborated with renowned stage
directors and choreographers. The ensemble also frequently gives
acclaimed concerts and semi-staged performances. Tonight’s programme
from the Fifth Book is part of a project of performing the
complete Monteverdi madrigals.
The ensemble’s impressive discography includes more than eighty
recordings in total. Les Arts Florissants are artists in residence at the
Théâtre de Caen, and present a concert season in the Basse-Normandie
region each year. The ensemble is a frequent ambassador for French
culture abroad, in for instance New York, London, Vienna, and Madrid.
This evening’s concert is their first visit to Stockholm since 1989.

paul agnew is in continuous demand as a conductor and inter preter
of baroque and preclassical repertoire. Since 2007, he is Associate
Conductor of Les Arts Florissants, and has led the orchestra on tour
to major venues in France and abroad. He is actively engaged in
the training of the next generation of specialist instrumentalists, he
has been the director of the Orchestre Français des Jeunes Baroque
and also co-director of the academy for young singers, Le Jardin des
Voix.
