As has been shown in the chapters on these novels,
Nabokov has taken the reader a long way in the discovery
of the truth and reality concerning all these
questions. But just as his own "reality" and identity
escapes one in the end, one cannot follow him the
whole way he has gone. He cannot disclose the whole
reality of what he has perceived, because, as Mr. R.
has also found, there is a limit to what one can express
in words and there is a kind of knowledge that
it is impossible to convey in words. Nabokov has taken
the reader as far as he possibly could, but, as he has
once
said:
I know more than I can express in words,
and the little I can express would not 10
have been expressed, had I not known more.
