portuguese people." (Boy, 9 years)<br />

"In the news, I changed the policy because it is time to get out of the crisis and<br />

stop talking about it." (Girl, 9 years)<br />

Finally, children were asked to rate the news. The majority gave a positive<br />

assessment. Although most of the news transmit negative events, children<br />

consider that the media are the most important source of information that<br />

ordinary people have access. Children acknowledge the role of journalism to<br />

the knowledge of the world, noting that "it's always good to know what is<br />

happening in the world, whether good or bad news, at least we are informed."<br />

(Boy, 9 years).<br />

6. Final notes<br />

In general, this group of children know the current affairs, and is counscious that<br />

the media are the main vehicle for transmitting knowledge and the present.<br />

Altough they consider that news portray, most of times, negative issues, such<br />

as the economic crisis, the children showed sense of responsibility and concern<br />

about such issues.<br />

When placed in the role of journalists, the children proved to be not only aware<br />

of the choices inherent in journalistic practice, but also the influence that this<br />

selection is in public. They consider that the issues should be more positive and<br />

better explained through the use of images and video.<br />

The opinion of this group about the journalists is positive, and those associated<br />

with hard-working heroes who work to meet the truth. However, children<br />

consider that journalists are sometimes misunderstood.<br />

The answers reveal an autonomy and a critical view of the news product, which<br />

are fundamental aspects to his training as participatory citizens.<br />

However, it is importante that media look to children as real audiences, in order<br />

to attract their attention. This is because despite knowing the themes conveyed<br />

in the news, the children showed little interest in them. This also seems to be<br />

the result of the uniformity and pessimism associated with the subjects<br />

portrayed, and the little attention given to the youngest, not considered, yet, real<br />

audiences.<br />
