positive values. The five core values
organization with a vision of building
strong kids, strong families and strong
communities.
Your time and talent will help create a
that will nurture people of all ages and
backgrounds, helping them to become
successful members of our community.
Partners Campaign: Our commitment to
living our charitable mission each and
every day keeps us strong and focused.
Although grounded in our historical
values, the YMCA continues to search for
and collaborate on new solutions to our
communities’ changing needs.
Funds raised in our Partners Campaign
help children and families participate
in values-based programs and events
such as child care, teen leadership,
older adult programming, community
service projects and aquatics. Now more
than ever, children and families need
the YMCA’s innovative programs and
services.
What’s more, all monies raised in
our Partners Campaign stays in the
Alvin-Manvel area and surrounding
communities. Won’t you join our efforts
to build strong kids, strong families and
strong communities through your own
Partners gift to keep the YMCA available
Active Older Adults
7
We know that older adults are seeking
more than physical benefits when they
begin exercising. They also want a
sense of community and have a desire
to strengthen social ties. In response
to this need, the YMCA has developed
several activities to encourage and
motivate older adults to take action and
get involved. YMCA programs for older
adults strengthen the whole person.
• Group exercise classes include water
aerobics, joint friendly and
SilverSneakers®.
• Social gatherings
• Day trips
• Monthly potluck luncheons
Your feedback is always welcome and
encouraged. If you have ideas for events
or trips, please fill out a comment card
and drop it off at the Welcome Center.
Be Active. Be Involved. Belong.
Health & Wellness
The YMCA Health and Wellness
Programs are developmentally
appropriate and help people at any
stage of life build positive health habits.
Participation in YMCA programs offers
youth and adults opportunities for
friendship and community, a sense of
well-being, increased self-confidence
and improved mental abilities.
YMCA programs and services cut across
diverse populations with diverse needs
and attempt to take into account
the total health of each person. The
programs include land and water fitness
classes for individuals and families of all
ages, educational classes, personalized
training programs, noncompetitive
youth sports and social opportunities,
for seniors and families.
Fitlinxx®: This is a computerized
tracking tool that will take the place
of a workout card, give individual
instruction on range of motion and
speed, display seat settings, target goals
and record every workout session. It’s
easy to track your progress and make
adjustments to your program when you
have a workout notebook. FitLinxx® is
attached directly to fitness equipment,
adding an extraordinary “intelligent”
dimension to the workout experience.
FitLinxx® “learns” users’ programs,
“coaches” them individually through
their workout for better form, safety
and confidence during every exercise,
and “tracks” their progress over time.
All the exercise machines are networked
into a central database, providing
exercisers and staff access to a wealth of
information on individual progress and
a unique set of motivational tools. The
system can be accessed on workout floor
kiosks, at the staff computer station, or
anytime on the web.
By adding this unique mental edge to
physical training, FitLinxx® provides
better results for exercisers. Make an
appointment at the Welcome Center to
get set up. FitLinxx® is included in your
facility membership.
Older Youth Strength Training: All youth
ages 12-15 must complete the older
youth strength training orientation
before using the wellness center. This
two hour class teaches participants how
to properly use the cardio and weight
machines. They must sign up for this
class at the Welcome Center.
Personal Training: A trainer can maximize
your results in a shorter period of time.
They can take the guesswork out of
which exercises, how much, how long and
how often. Most importantly, working
with a personal trainer can increase
your energy and stamina, improve the
integrity of your joints, protect you from
injury, decrease the possibility of disease
and increase your self esteem.
Even those experienced exercisers can
benefit; a trainer can add variety to your
workout. Sessions are sold individually
or in packages for added value. Sessions
must be paid in advance of scheduling.
introduced to new activities and sports.
The program stresses active involvement,
teamwork and most of all, fun.
Dance: Our dance program encourages
children to express themselves through
movement and music. Grace, balance
Sports
The YMCA believes that Youth
Sports programs encourage and
promote healthy and strong kids,
families and communities by placing
a priority on family involvement, the
value of participation over winning,
team building as well as individual
development, a positive self-image and
a sense of fair play and mutual respect
for others.
Caring volunteer coaches create an
environment in which children learn and
practice core values of responsibility,
honesty, respect, faith and caring.
Parents are encouraged to contribute
their time as volunteer coaches, team
parents and officials, as well as being
their kid’s greatest fan. YMCA Youth
Sports programs are a great start to a
lifetime of fitness and values.
Program Director at 281.585.3112.
Teens
There are many distractions that
compete for the attention of our youth
today. It’s important that the messages
they hear are coming from positive
sources. All young people, regardless of
economic, geographic, ethnic, gender or
religious background, face choices that
can positively or negatively influence
their futures.
Every day, the YMCA sees teens that are
excited about learning leadership skills
and participating in projects. The YMCA
wants teens and families to know there
is a way for youth to reach new heights,
and is committed to programs for older
youth and teens that offer character
development, citizenship, leadership
and service programs in collaboration
with local school districts and other
community organizations.
Leadership Programs:
YMCA Youth and Government - This
club will teach the teens about the
democratic process: research and write
bills, debate issues, vote on proposals
and run for office. They will gain an
understanding of how our government
works, how laws are made and how they
can make a difference.
Junior Achievers - This group encourages
teens to excel in school, prepare
for college and view their future as
filled with endless possibilities and
opportunities.
Junior Leaders - This teaches practical
leadership and teamwork skills that will
enable the students to become effective
leaders. Students are responsible for
creating and managing special projects
throughout the year for the YMCA and
their community.
Through these clubs, the teens will
grow into responsible adults who are
confident in their ability to make a
difference.
Programs offered depend entirely on youth
interest and participation.
