Johor Bahru or fondly known as
JB is the state capital of Johor
in southern Peninsular Malaysia
just across the Causeway
from Singapore on the Straits
of Johor. Originally known as
Tanjung Puteri, Johor Bahru was
renamed in 1866 by Sultan Abu
Bakar. The history of Johor plays
a role in influencing and shaping
the character and background
of social and culture in Johor.

TANJUNG PUTERI

TUN SRI LANANG PARK
This park at the heart of
JB is named after Tun Sri
Lanang, the pen name of Tun
Muhammad bin Tun Ahmad, the
Bendahara to the old Sultanate.
Apart from being a top adviser
to the then Sultan, Tun Sri
Lanang was also a literary

SENTRAL POLICE STATION
Built in 1914, this Colonial
building was the third to replace
the original ‘Pos Police’ at Bukit
Polis. Located along Jalan
Sawmill, the police station
building is still well used and
has blended into its surrounding

WONG AH FOOK VILLAGE
A Chinese who came to Johor
in the 1850’s and established
himself as a carpenter who
became the royal builder,
Wong Ah Fook, founded Johor
Bahru town with Temenggung
Daeng Ibrahim in 1855. The
street named after him is a
bustling business centre today.

JOHOR BAHRU RAILWAY
STATION
Opened in 1909, the station
is an icon in JB. As a gateway
to travelling in the early days,
it used to be known as the
Wooden Railway as it had tracks
made of timber. The station has
closed after 100 years and is
currently a KTMB Mini Museum.

OLD CHINESE TEMPLE
Located at the heart of Jalan
Trus, the temple is the symbol
of unity among the Five Chinese
Dialects community. Built in the
19th century by Tan Hiok Nee
and other Chinese leaders, the
plaque in the temple states that
it is around 130 years old.
GURDWARA SAHIB
Completed in 1921, the temple
of the Sikhs was allocated by the
Johor Police Commissioner upon
request of the Sikhs who were
mostly part of the police force. The
land had to be strengthened with
stones before the temple could be
built on.

and metaphorically.
Once a thriving Chinese
business district, it is
now predominantly a
showcase of Indian

BROADWAY THEATRE
Gone are the days of Capitol
Theatre, Rex and Lido Theatres
which were the prime spots for
movie goers back in the day.
Broadway however still remains
open with their screenings of
Tamil and Hindi Movies and
strives amidst technologically
enhanced cinemas.

OLD BUILDINGS ROAD
TAN HIOK NEE STREET
Known as ‘Major China Johor’,
Tan Hiok Nee was the leader of
the Ngee Heng Kongsi. Among the
wealthiest in Johor Bahru, he was
known for pepper and gambier
planting and owning many assets
around town area. The street
named after him is kept vibrant
with Art Festivities nowadays.
Jalan Dhoby and Jalan Tan
Hiok Nee are part of the trail
with a mixture of Chinese
and Indian heritages brought
to passersby in forms of
ethnic business and building
architecture in these streets.
CHINESE HERITAGE MUSEUM
Occupied by the Johor Bahru Tiong-
Hua Association since 1948, it was
officially opened as a heritage museum
in October 2009. The museum preserves
valuable information about the cultural
and traditional ways of the early Chinese

Johor has a couple of museums and
Muzium Tokoh at the Dato Jaafar
Building is a must mention. Constructed
in the 1890’s it was used extensively
both by the British and the Japanese
during war times. Currently the museum
is managed by Yayasan Warisan Johor.

The Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque is a combination of English
and Moorish architecture and is located on a hill overlooking
the Straits of Johor. Admission is free and the visiting hours
are 10am to 6pm from Saturday to Thursday except during
congregational prayers.

ARTS & CULTURE
The Kuda Kepang best represents as the traditional Malay
dance of Johor. The dance depicts warriors in battle till
victory is celebrated. The Chinese lion dance is also common
especially during the Chinese New Year festival throughout
Malaysia as it is in JB and traditional Indian dances are
propagated by the likes of Temple of Fine Arts and others
like Vsuryam Arts. The Art Gallery at Jalan Petrie displays
works of various talented Johor born artists. Besides paintings
and sculptures, the gallery also showcases discovered and
historical items amongst other items.

Taman Merdeka at Jalan
Datin Halimah is not merely
a park to stroll but it’s more
of a walk down memory lane.
It features different phases
of JB from the time of the
old Malay Sultanate, the
Sultan Abu Bakar Memoria,
the Japanese Invasion
Memorial, Communist Eras

Johor Bahru Zoo, located at Jalan Gertak Merah is a 5 minutes
drive from the JB Town. With an entrance fee of RM2.00 for
adults, the Zoo is a must visit! With one of the biggest collections
of tigers, the zoo also has an entourage of lions, elephants and
camels to name a few.

BEACHES
Located about 70km from Kota
Tinggi town, Tanjung Balau has
various facilities including food stalls,
playgrounds and souvenir shops
besides their serene beautiful beach!
There is also a Fishermen Museum
nearby which was established more that
18 years ago to highlight the area’s local
fishery activities and its historic legacy.
Desaru which is about 5 minutes away
from Tanjung Balau is known for its
slightly rougher seas but in terms of accommodations, Desaru has a
number of notable resorts in its vicinity. With the opening of the new
Senai–Desaru Expressway, the journey to Desaru is only at a fraction
of time, making it a very popular getaway!

Shopping outlets in JB consist of hypermarket, supermarkets and
retail shops. From an assortment of household goods to support
services like banks, restaurants, Cineplex’s and Duty Free Zone;
JB is a shopper’s paradise! Also to lookout for are the bazaars and
open air night markets that operate at scheduled locations on certain
days of the week. The foreword here is “haggle and bargain”! Local
Handicrafts are must have gifts for your home or for your loved
ones. Ranging from batik, pewter ware, and wood carvings to rattan
ornaments, JB is a treasure trove for souvenir hunters.

Johor Area Rehabilitation Organisation (JARO) Handicrafts
Centre, located along Jalan Sungai Chat, sells hand-made
cane furniture, soft toys, rattan baskets and customized bookbinds,
among others and they are all produced by the physically
disabled. JARO is an organization that focuses on the needs
of the disabled through its rehabilitative shelter and workshop

Sultan Ibrahim or
Bukit Timbalan
is unmistakably
the icon of JB.
The building used
to house the State
Secretariat and
the offices of the
state government
for 67 years
until the recent
relocation to Kota Iskandar, Nusajaya. It was the tallest building
in Malaya during the pre-Merdeka era. Lately, Bukit Timbalan has
housed the Earth Hour events and the 8th JB Arts Festival, giving

Located at Nusajaya, Kota Iskandar is the administrative centre for
the Johor state government. Based on Islamic architecture, it revolves
around the philosophy that harmonizes humanity with the State’s

The State Legislative Assembly Hall is the first ‘parliament’ open to
public in Malaysia. It’s detailed with JB based nature concepts with the
pineapple roof, the 10 pillars marking the 10 districts of Johor, the extra

vines (the original fruit and spice Johor was known for).

Tanjung Piai is the
southernmost point of
Peninsular Malaysia. It also
helms a RAMSAR wetlands

DEVELOPMENT
The Pasir Gudang Kite Museum is
dedicated to the traditional Malay kite known
as the Wau. With the aim to preserve and
promote the Wau as part of the Malaysian
craft heritage, this museum showcases the
art of kite-making and displays a collection
of traditional Wau’s and modern kites, in
spectacular colours and designs. Visitors
can also enjoy the video display relating to
the tradition of kites.
