TECHNICAL NOTES C.S.A. Input — Firing rate in BTU/hr. for atmospheric gas boilers based on C.S.A. certification test procedures. I=B=R Input — Firing rate in gallons per hour of oil or BTU/hr. of gas in accordance with Hydronics Institute test procedures. DOE Heating Capacity — Heat output of the boiler based on standard test procedures prescribed by the U. S. Department of Energy. Applies C.S.A. to boilers Grossunder Output 300,000 — Heat BTU/hr. outputinput. of the boiler based on tests conducted at the C.S.A. Laboratory. Applies to atmospheric gas boilers with I=B=R inputs of Gross 300,000 Output BTU/hr. — Heat and over. output of the boiler based on tests conducted in accordance with Hydronics Institute procedures. Applies to oil, Net gas I=B=R and gas-oil Ratings boilers — The with power DOE heating burners capacity, when the input C.S.A. is gross output, or I=B=R gross output less deductions for piping and pickup. Certified Ratings — Ratings when boiler is fired with special burners and/or under conditions other than stipulated by I=B=R code SELECTING THE BOILER Boilers should be selected based on the Net I=B=R rating when piping and pickup factors are considered normal. Net I=B=R ratings are shown in BTU/hr. for water & steam and in square feet of steam. To select residential boilers for gravity hot water systems, floor panel systems, hot water or steam systems with larger than normal piping and pickup factors, and replacement boilers on hot water or steam systems with old style radiation and large piping, the old I=B=R piping and pickup factors should be used. These older I=B=R factors will be approximated if the boiler size is increased about 15 percent. Weil-McLain shall have no liability for the selection of the appropriate boiler for the ultimate user. ASME CONSTRUCTION All Weil-McLain boiler sections meet the requirements of the ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code, Section IV, Heating Boilers. DOMESTIC HOT WATER LOAD Weil-McLain boilers may be equipped to provide domestic hot water by using an indirect-fired water heater or tankless heater. The volume of domestic water produced depends upon the capacity of the heater and the firing rate of the boiler. For Weil-McLain indirect-fired water heaters, use Weil-McLain indirectfired water heater selection information for proper sizing. For tankless water heaters used in small and medium sized residences, where the demand for hot water is normal, an additional allowance is generally not required for domestic water heating in selecting the boiler. Domestic water heater sizes and capacities are listed for each boiler, and directions are given for figuring additional allowance in larger homes with more than two bathrooms. Weil-McLain Ratings for Tankless Heaters: Tankless heater ratings are determined from a series of tests in the respective boiler and based upon an intermittent draw schedule which allows a specific recovery period after each interval of a draw. The heater ratings in gallons per minute are expressed in average temperature rise of 100°F. and apply only to specific tankless heaters when used in specified boilers. FUELS Oil Firing: Weil-McLain boilers for oil firing are available for oil and for combination gas/oil. Oil fired ratings are based on boilers being fired at firing rates listed, burning oil with a heat content of 140,000 BTU’s per gallon. (150,000 BTU’s per gallon of heavy oil.) Gas Firing: Weil-McLain boilers for gas firing are available for atmospheric gas, power gas and combination gas/oil. Net ratings of these boilers when fired with gas are the same as those shown for oil, providing the draft conditions on the installation are comparable to those used for oil firing. RADIATION Baseboard Ratings: All Weil-McLain baseboards have approved I=B=R ratings expressed in BTU’s as shown in sales literature. ELEVATIONS ABOVE 2,000 FEET All ratings are based on elevations up to 2,000 feet. For atmospheric gas boilers at elevations above 2,000 feet, ratings should be reduced at the rate of 4 percent for each 1,000 feet above sea level. For oil or power gas heating units above 2,000 feet elevation, do not arbitrarily increase the boiler size; a larger burner may be required at additional cost. 50 CYCLE OPERATION For heating units with burners operating on 50 cycle rather than 60 cycle current, the rating should be reduced 20 percent, or the published rating can be used and a larger burner may be required.
