Introducti<strong>on</strong><br />

Our problem statement was “Does different<br />

colored lighting affect <strong>the</strong> growth <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> caterpillars?” We decided to study this<br />

problem because we thought it would be interesting to see if <strong>the</strong> caterpillars<br />

would grow faster in <strong>the</strong> green light because <strong>the</strong>y live in and eat green leaves.<br />

Our hypo<strong>the</strong>sis was “If we placed two groups <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> caterpillars, <strong>on</strong>e in <strong>the</strong> green light and <strong>on</strong>e in white light,<br />

<strong>the</strong> caterpillars will grow faster in <strong>the</strong> green light than <strong>the</strong> caterpillars in <strong>the</strong> white light”. We chose that as<br />

our hypo<strong>the</strong>sis because in life caterpillars are surrounded by leaves and trees which are green.<br />

We used <strong>the</strong> Vanessa cardui because our caterpillars <strong>the</strong>y grow very quickly and can give us quick<br />

results. Also, <strong>the</strong> caterpillars were adapting fairly well due to <strong>the</strong>ir locati<strong>on</strong> in <strong>the</strong> lab. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>y used <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

nutrients efficiently because <strong>the</strong>y were growing ra<strong>the</strong>r quickly. In additi<strong>on</strong> our caterpillars were not very<br />

colorful.<br />

Materials and Methods<br />

For this project we tested if different colored lights affect <strong>the</strong> growth rate <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong><br />

caterpillars. We used 2 florescent lamps so <strong>the</strong> caterpillars were not receiving any heat.<br />

One <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> lamps had a green light bulb (<strong>the</strong> experimental group) and <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r lamp had a<br />

normal light bulb (<strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>trol group). Also, we used black pieces <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> paper,<br />

painters tape, <strong>the</strong> caterpillar kit, small plastic cups, a big c<strong>on</strong>tainer caterpillar food, and an<br />

empty gas chamber. We used <strong>the</strong> gas chamber to put <strong>the</strong> caterpillars inside so n<strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong><br />

outside light would affect <strong>the</strong> results <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> caterpillar weren’t affected. Since <strong>the</strong> windows<br />

<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> gas chamber were clear we had to place <strong>the</strong> pieces <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> black c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> paper over<br />

<strong>the</strong> window. First we placed 7.2 ounces <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> food in 30 little c<strong>on</strong>tainers. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>n we split <strong>the</strong>m<br />

up into 2 groups <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 15 <strong>the</strong>n we placed <strong>the</strong>m in <strong>the</strong> big c<strong>on</strong>tainers and positi<strong>on</strong>ed it in <strong>the</strong> gas<br />

chambers and turned <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> lights. We did this experiment because we wanted to find out if<br />

different colored lighting affected <strong>the</strong> growth <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> caterpillars. Each day we recorded if <strong>the</strong><br />

caterpillars were superior in <strong>the</strong> green light or in <strong>the</strong> white light. We also had to see if <strong>the</strong><br />

caterpillars were dead. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> data we analyzed quantitatively was whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>re was a<br />

difference in <strong>the</strong> number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> days from start to pupati<strong>on</strong> between treatment and c<strong>on</strong>trol.

Results<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> descripti<strong>on</strong> data that we collected shows that <strong>the</strong> green light in <strong>the</strong> experimental group<br />

actually slowed down <strong>the</strong> process (Table 1). In <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>trol group, when 4 had pupated, <strong>on</strong>ly<br />

1 had pupated in <strong>the</strong> experimental group. And also, that <strong>on</strong>e had died <strong>the</strong> experimental<br />

group.<br />

Discussi<strong>on</strong><br />

In our experiment we tested to see if <strong>the</strong> green light affected <strong>the</strong> growth <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> caterpillars<br />

because all <strong>the</strong>ir lives <strong>the</strong>y ate green leaves. Since everything <strong>the</strong>y ate was green we<br />

thought that <strong>the</strong> color light would affect <strong>the</strong> rate <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong>ir development. However, <strong>the</strong> time<br />

from start <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> experiment to pupati<strong>on</strong> was not significantly different between treatment<br />

and c<strong>on</strong>trol groups.
