EUROPEAN STUDBOOK CROWNED PIGEONS
1. Introduction
The EEP for crowned pigeons started in 1987 and was changed into ESB in 2001. This is due to
the improvement of the status of the populations in captivity which resulted in less need for
management. Another change has been that a lot of privately owned crowned pigeons are no longer
allowed to the ESB programme. This decision was made because of the lack of accurate
information the private owners were able to offer. For example, it occurred frequently that when a
pigeon hatched that the parents were unknown and that the sex will not be determined.
In the past eight years the number of crowned pigeons registered in the programme increased
substantially. This increase was mostly due to natural growth since not many imports and
confiscations occurred since 2000. The progress of the registered crowned pigeons populations
from 2000 up to 2008 is presented in figure 1.1. In chapter 2, 3 and 4 the management data is given
of the three species of crowned pigeons as well as the age distribution. In these chapters the current
status of the three species is described and special attention is paid to the development of the ESBpopulation
(births, deaths and transfers). Furthermore a historical list is included for all three
species. Unfortunately in the past eight years little research on crowned pigeons has been done.
Therefore the research part of this studbook, chapter 5, consists mainly of obtained summaries of
the most practical information from previous studbooks. The final chapter lists the publications of
crowned pigeons used for this studbook. The tables in the appendix show the numbers of crowned
pigeons that are registered in ISIS arranged by continent. More information on crowned pigeons
can be found in the Crowned Pigeons Studbook number 1 by Han Assink, and number 3 and 4 by
Joeke Nijboer.
