EUROPEAN STUDBOOK CROWNED PIGEONS
5.1 Taxonomy
Crowned pigeons (Goura spp.) are endemic species of the island New Guinea, belonging to the
family Columbidae (Pigeons). Pigeons are unique among birds in that their young are fed on a
nutritious substance known as 'crop-milk' (Baptista et al., 1997). Within this family they form a
distinct group, the Gourinae. Crowned pigeons differ from the other pigeons in several anatomical
features (Salvadori, 1893) and their size. The subfamily of Gourinae consists of only one genus,
the Goura. The birds of this genus are the largest amongst the order of Columbiformes. The three
species of Goura each comprise two subspecies.
