• Kudos and thanks to Becky Pinkerton from the new class for remapping the Extension and
Cactus Gardens. The gardens had not been remapped in years, so there were original plants that
were gone and new plants that were not on the map.
• The May Herb SIG will be held Monday, May 11, at 10:00 a.m., at the Extension Office on the
far side of the horse barn. The program will be two-fold: Catherine Hall will demonstrate sandcasting
using leaves. You can cast your own, but you will need to bring your own supplies.
You can also watch and learn. Then Don Tuff will demonstrate basic yard tool sharpening
and maintenance. If you would like to attend, please RSVP to Mary Hopmann by Monday, May
4. Further details will be furnished to those attending. When RSVPing, please indicate if you
will be sand-casting along with Catherine.
• Congratulations to Nancy Hodo, from Class XI, for becoming a Master Gardener!
• Be an early bird and stop the worm! Sign up for our own Don Tuff’s workshop on “Vegetable
Insects: What to Do about Them” June 6, 10:00 am to noon, Texas AgriLife Extension Office –
Comal County. Free and open to the public. For information, call 830-620-3440 or Pat
Williford at 830-885-6762.
• Anyone wishing to become a Rainwater Specialist should consider enrolling in the Granbury
Rainwater Specialist Class June 1-3. Only 30 participant spots are available, and registration in
on the TMGA site: http://www.texasmastergardeners.org Go down the left menu, click on the
her hard work in designing and preparing them.
• Mark Your Calendars for December 11. As Master Gardeners we know better than anyone else
that the “Early Bird Gets the Worm.” We want to be the first ones to invite you to a 2009
Christmas Party. Our CMG 2009 Christmas Party has been scheduled for Friday evening,
December 11 at the Forke Store in the New Braunfels Conservation Plaza. Please plan to join
us for good food and fun. We will be giving you more notices in the fall, but no excuses, we
Board Acts on Two Issues
During its April meeting, the board approved changing the Comal Master Gardener class names from the
original Roman numerals to the calendar year, to avoid confusion and to more easily identify the classes.
That means the present class will be called Class 2009, not Class XII. Future classes will follow that same
designation.
The board also approved a temporary volunteer project involving the New Braunfels Public Library
landscape. Comal Master Gardeners will identify and label existing plants and suggest xeriscapic additions
to the present beds. Any CMG may volunteer for this project. If interested, contact Karen Scherrer.
CMG Showered with April Events
Organizer of the CMG booth Saturday, April 25, for the local Earth Day celebration, Evelyn Nielsen,
thanks everyone who participated in the event. Thirty volunteers helped with the booth activities that
included helping over 150 children plant seeds in a cup. In addition, four people interested in joining Class
2010 picked up information.
Over 70 CMG members enjoyed the annual picnic on the back lawn of the Lindheimer Home Sunday,
April 26. Many members of Class 2009 attended. Good food and fun were the order of the day. Karen
wishes to thank the many people who brought tables and stayed to clean up. The only missing ingredients
to the relaxed, collegial event were the usual spring rain that has ended the festivities several times and the
absence of those members who could not attend.
KIB Blooming this Spring
Comal area schools are excited to cap off another fun year of school gardening with the Annual Spring
Garden Tour. A total of nine elementary and middle schools in both Comal and New Braunfels school
districts have been busily planting seeds and transplanting vegetables and herbs.
The Plant Haus and New Braunfels Feed & Supply have donated ALL of the plants, with the exception of
the tomatoes. Our very own Clif Fleming earned volunteer hours by growing some of the healthiest, most
beautiful tomato transplants ever seen! In addition, Nancy Horne, Evelyn Nielson and Marty Hopmann all
donated various flower and vegetable seeds to the program.
Nancy Pappas, head of Kids In Bloom, would like to encourage other Master Gardeners to earn hours and
participate in Kids In Bloom in this way, especially in growing vegetable and herb transplants. The
program is growing so quickly Nancy is embarrassed to impose so much on the two areas businesses.
Thanks to Nancy, Kids In Bloom is growing. There is a noticeable trend in area schools: teachers are
writing grants to fund greenhouses and out-door learning centers. Many are looking for ways to
supplement the test-based curriculum with fun, exciting learning experiences that actively involve their
students.
Nancy is looking forward to learning more about the Junior Master Gardener Program and adding it to the
KIB program to further enrich the opportunities CMG can offer Comal area teachers. According to Nancy,
“All of the teachers that I work with constantly remind me of how much their students enjoy the gardening
experience. I hear many stories of students who have never seen vegetables on an actual plant before, only
in the supermarket, or kids who ‘hate’ broccoli but try it when it’s come off a plant that they have grown.
That’s when they find out how good it is -- and we all know it absolutely tastes better then the grocery store
version!”
Kids In Bloom is not only about the plants, though. The committee is also working to encourage teachers
to try worm composting and rainwater collection. KIB plans to work with the Junior Master Gardener
Program, which has many environmentally-conscious programs. (cont. on page 4)

Comal Gardener May 2009 4
(cont. from page 3)
Nancy appreciates everyone who shows an interest in KIB. “I know I feel like I could devote my whole
life to the program and never do it justice; it is such a powerful and wonderful thing to see those kids out in
the gardens.”
Watch for updates on the school tours. The current school closures will affect the gardens and the tours,
but Nancy will keep CMGs posted as she finds out schools’ schedules.
She also plans to have some workshops this summer to work on updating the current notebook and would
love members’ participation, especially current and retired teachers and administrators. Anyone interested
in becoming more involved with the program, please call or email any questions to Nancy Pappas 830-885-
