Office of Legal Resources<br />

<strong>The</strong> staff attorneys — known as master commissioners — in<br />

the Office of Legal Resources actively supervised discovery in<br />

original actions, and provided research and writing support<br />

to the Justices on the non-discretionary portion of the <strong>Court</strong>’s<br />

docket, which included memos, drafts and research projects in:<br />

• 55 death penalty appeals (on conviction and<br />

postconviction matters)<br />

• 21 public utility appeals<br />

• 50 workers’ compensation appeals<br />

• 45 state tax appeals<br />

• 288 extraordinary writs<br />

• 84 attorney discipline cases.<br />

<strong>The</strong> master commissioners also assisted the Chief Justice with<br />

processing 124 affidavits of disqualification and nine motions<br />

for reconsideration.<br />

Office of the <strong>Report</strong>er<br />

<strong>The</strong> Office of the <strong>Report</strong>er edits all opinions prior to release<br />

by the <strong>Court</strong> and prepares and releases slip opinions, daily case<br />

announcements and periodic administrative actions. <strong>The</strong> office<br />

also publishes the weekly <strong>Ohio</strong> Official <strong>Report</strong>s advance sheets<br />

and the bound volumes of the <strong>Ohio</strong> Official <strong>Report</strong>s. In addition,<br />

the office maintains the <strong>Court</strong>’s Opinions and Announcements<br />

Web page, on which more than 66,000 <strong>Supreme</strong> <strong>Court</strong>, court<br />

of appeals and trial court opinions are posted for no-cost public<br />

access.<br />

During 2009, the Office of the <strong>Report</strong>er edited and timely<br />

published in print the <strong>Ohio</strong> Official <strong>Report</strong>s advance sheets of 442<br />

<strong>Supreme</strong> <strong>Court</strong> opinions, 472 court of appeals opinions and<br />

26 <strong>Court</strong> of Claims and trial court opinions. <strong>The</strong> 442 <strong>Supreme</strong><br />

<strong>Court</strong> opinions required 2,158 pages in the <strong>Ohio</strong> Official<br />

<strong>Report</strong>s advance sheets, while the 472 court of appeals opinions<br />

required 4,442 pages. Overall, the Office of the <strong>Report</strong>er was<br />

responsible for the content of about 8,900 pages of the <strong>Ohio</strong><br />

Official <strong>Report</strong>s advance sheets during 2009.<br />

In addition, during 2009, the Office of the <strong>Report</strong>er posted to<br />

the <strong>Supreme</strong> <strong>Court</strong> Web site 426 <strong>Supreme</strong> <strong>Court</strong> opinions, 330<br />

case announcements and administrative actions, 5,869 court<br />

of appeals opinions, 414 <strong>Court</strong> of Claims opinions and 25 trial<br />

court opinions.<br />
