A CAUSE FOR CELEBRATION
The St. Catharines General Hospital Foundation Marks 25 Years of Fundraising Success!
The St. Catharines General Hospital Foundation (SCGHF) is
celebrating 25 years of fundraising success, effectively organizing
events and activities that apply to "the advancement of health
education, medical and health research and the improvement of patient
care for the St. Catharines General Hospital."
Over the years, the Foundation has launched many successful
campaigns including:
* Installing a Digital Fluoroscopy Unit in January, 2009
* Raisings funds required to open the self-referral Evangelista/Adams
Centre for Breast Screening
* Raising $7.2 million for state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment for the
"Breakthrough Health Care" Campaign including: Niagara's first MRI;
Dual Head Gamma Camera and a Cardiac Investigative Unit.
* Successfully raising $1.1 million for the new equipment needs for the
Emergency Department after patient visits increased from 47,000 to
67,000 annually. Following a very generous gift, the Department was renamed
the Robert E. Redmond Emergency Department.
* The "Heartbeat" Campaign raised $500,000 for the purchase of a new
Echo-Doppler machine and three new GE Vivid-7 Cardiovascular
Ultrasound Systems.
* Raising $800,000 to purchase Niagara's first Digital Mammography
Unit for the Evangelista/Adams Centre for Breast Screening.
With overwhelming support from the community, the SCGH Foundation has raised over $25 million in the past decade toward
purchasing capital patient equipment for the Niagara Health System.
"I don't think
there is a
fundraiser in
the peninsula
that even
comes close to
the
Foundation.
Big trees of
little acorns
grow, and this
is a big tree."
Mr. John
Bullivant,
SCGHF
Founding
President.
"Due to the lack of funding in our health care system today, our work is constantly challenged," says Sandra Sabo, Chief
Operating Officer for the SCGH Foundation. "Understanding how important the needs are for our patients and medical staff
allows our office to stay motivated and committed to the cause."
While the Foundation has maintained a successful track record of fundraising, there is still more work to be done. Our health
care facility serves more than 160,000 people each year, proving there is no question we need to continue raising our profile
through building relationships and exceeding our goals. The current capital equipment needs at the St. Catharines General and
Ontario Street sites total $4.5 million. All equipment purchased today will be transferred and used at the future state-of-the-art
health care centre currently under construction at First Street and Fourth Avenue in St. Catharines. Your support today will
support our needs tomorrow.
Sandra is passionate when she speaks of the dedicated volunteers who are always available to lend a helping hand: "In our world
of self-indulgence, the sacrifice our volunteers make is very rare. If it was an easy task, then everyone would be volunteering. I
congratulate our many volunteers who assist with the campaign initiatives, participate in our signature events, participate as
board members and organize third party events. Our volunteers, no matter how they spend their time with us, are part of
history in the making and they should be very proud."
"It has been an honour to serve on the Board of Directors and currently as President of the St. Catharines
General Hospital Foundation," states Ameer Wakil. "Being involved over the years with the Foundation Team,
volunteers and donors has been a real inspiration to my family and I. We are thankful for the overwhelming
generosity of our donors."
Seeds of Change
Each year in May, the Sexual Assault/Domestic Violence Treatment Program organizes
the "Seeds of Change" campaign where flower seeds are distributed throughout the
community to raise public awareness regarding sexual violence. This treatment program
is a regional service which provides immediate, confidential, and individualized
treatment to females or males who have recently been sexually assaulted or are victims
of intimate partner abuse.
Once again, Stokes Seeds
supported this program by
donating 1,000 flower seeds in
customized packets which were
distributed in our community.
Kudos to Emergency Team
Letter from a Grateful Parent
Dear Sir/Madam:
Our 19-year-old son was brought by ambulance to your hospital around
10:30 p.m. on January 20th suffering from anaphylaxis.
He tells us that the Emergency Department saw him immediately and
that he was surrounded at all times by excellent care and kindness.
Although he arrived alone, they insisted that he leave accompanied by,
and stay in the care of, a responsible person for the remainder of the
night, which he did.
The thought of our sweet, strong, healthy, athletic son being so
vulnerable - and so quickly! - is beyond our comprehension, and we
cannot thank you enough for taking such wonderful care of him.
Please, please let your entire Emergency team, and especially Dr. Raphi
Setrak, know how appreciative we are for your quick, careful,
considerate help. Please accept our donation in honour of your
outstanding team.
With our gratitude, His Parents.
"Art is not a part of life, it is not an addition to life, it is the essence of those pieces of
us that make us fulfilled. That give us hope." Hasan Davis
"
Dr. Shimizu is one of the great figures in
Canadian Medicine," says Jane Cornelius,
Clinical Manager of the Nephrology Program.
"His accomplishments are too plentiful to list, but
certainly one of his greatest achievements is the
creation of the Canadian Renal Failure Registry in
1972, which is still in use today."
After a distinguished career serving kidney disease
patients in Niagara and Hamilton, Dr. Shimizu
retired at the end of 2009. To honour his years of
service and excellence to Nephrology the Dr. Art
Shimizu Art was created.
"Dr. Shimizu would always take a moment to
teach and explain issues to patients, nurses and
Honouring a Pioneer in Nephrology
colleagues," says Jane. "The Nephrology Team
wanted to acknowledge his extraordinary
achievements and commitment to learning."
This recognition award will be given annually to a
medical student from the Niagara Campus of the
McMaster University Michael G. DeGroote School
of Medicine. Recipients will display a
commitment to excellence and an interest in
Nephrology.
The SCGH Foundation would like to wish Dr. Art
Shimizu a healthy and happy retirement.
