Nordstrom Welcome Center to be Next Major Construction Project
Wesleyan has begun
site preparation for the
new Nordstrom Welcome
Center. Thanks to a generous
gift from Bruce and
Jeannie O’Rourke Nordstrom
’70 and a challenge
grant from the Reeves
Foundation of Princeton,
NJ, the Nordstrom Welcome
Center is set to open
this summer on College
Avenue adjacent to the
Virginia Thomas Law Center for the Performing Arts.
The new facility will house the College’s admission
and financial aid departments. The addition of this project
will create much
needed space in Middleton
Hall for Wesleyan’s
expanding School
of Health Sciences.
Athletic training, exercise
science, and nursing
are three of the
College’s most popular majors. Nursing enrollment has
grown to 143 students, and the department now offers a
range of graduate programs.
This is the third challenge
grant Wesleyan has
received from the Reeves
Foundation. The previous
awards helped complete
the funding for the
Virginia Thomas Law
Center for the Performing
Arts and the David
E. Reemsnyder Research
Center.
“We are extremely
grateful to Bruce and
Jeannie and to the Reeves Foundation for their generous
support,” stated Wesleyan President Pamela Balch
’71. “This project has been a long-time priority in
our Master
Campus Facilities
plan.
The Center
will allow
Wesleyan
to create a
tremendous
first impression
for our
prospective students and their parents.”
Remembering John Martin Law ’40
Excerpts from Remarks Shared by William O. Goodwin, Hon. ’05 at the Memorial Service
So we are here to honor an honorable man, to celebrate
the 95 years he walked upon this earth, and we
are here to remember...
...He was a pragmatic product of the Depression. He
was a thinker who owned a keen intellect, and he was
a gifted problem-solver. Always the gracious, gentle
man, he was in control of his emotions yet he was not
afraid to show his emotion. Not a touchy, feely, or
overly expressive type, he did hold feelings that were
deep and rich which he increasingly found ways to
share.
...He was a stellar example of successful personal financial
management, of comprehensive legacy planning,
and of philanthropy. Although John lived modestly,
he gave lavishly. To his Alma Mater, he gave toward
a wonderful cause, and because of that gift, the Virginia
Thomas Law Center for the Performing Arts
now stands as one of the finest buildings on the campus
of West Virginia Wesleyan College.
...John said, “As you climb your ladder of success,
one hand is reaching ahead of the next rung while the
other hand is reaching back to help the one who is
following you.”
...As we keep alive our precious memories of John,
he will live in our hearts and in our minds. I pray that
we will remember until our minds can remember no
more John Martin Law... a complete human being, an
uncommon man.

Using Your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) for Charitable Giving
Alumni and friends of West Virginia Wesleyan who
receive a “required minimum distribution” (RMD) in
2013 from their IRA (generally persons 70 ½ years old
or older) can arrange a transfer of all or a portion of
their RMD (up to $100,000) to West Virginia Wesleyan
College.
There’s an advantage for the IRA holder and, of
course, your giving strengthens West Virginia Wesleyan
as you designate how the College may benefit from
your transferred funds.
As an advantage for the IRA owner, the transfer from
your IRA is a non-taxable event. You will not have to
pay income taxes on the transferred amount, but the
transfer does count toward the amount of your “required
minimum distribution” from your IRA for this
tax year (2013).
Ways You Can Give To
West Virginia
Wesleyan
College
By check. Make your check payable to West Virginia Wesleyan College.
By credit card (American Express, Discover, MasterCard, or
Visa). Go to www.wvwc.edu or call the Office of Advancement.
By electronic funds transfer (monthly). Wesleyan EFT is safe,
secure, and you will know when your account is being debited.
You can choose to use your credit card, checking, or savings
account. Withdrawals are made around the 15th of each month.
By stock transfer. Stocks, bonds, or mutual funds make excellent
gifts to the College. For stock held by a broker, instruct your
broker to electronically transfer the shares to Wesleyan.
The transfer (gift) from your IRA generates neither
taxable income nor a tax deduction, so you benefit
even if you do not itemize your tax deductions.
To accomplish this transfer, contact your IRA custodian
and make a request (they may have a form to complete)
for the amount (of your RMD) you desire to be
transferred to West Virginia Wesleyan. Consult your
professional advisors to determine if this is an appropriate
way for you to give to West Virginia Wesleyan
from your “required minimum distribution” of your
IRA in 2013. Please start this process soon so that it
can be completed by year-end.
The US Congress has been passing this IRA provision
year by year; it is not certain this opportunity to make a gift
to Wesleyan from the “required minimum distribution” of
your IRA will be available in subsequent tax years.
With personal property or collectibles. A gift-in-kind allows
you to give personal property to West Virginia Wesleyan College
in the form of real estate, books for the Library, antiques, collectibles,
or works of art. If the College can use the gift in its educational
program, you may deduct the full fair market value. The fair
market value is determined by a professional appraisal obtained
by the donor.
Through life income gifts. You may also make gifts in the form
of charitable remainder trusts or charitable annuities. These
gifts retain an income for you or others and provide substantial
tax advantages. They also are significant financial, tax, and
estate planning tools.
Give with a matching gift. Check to see if your
employer, or your spouse’s employer, matches
gifts. Increase your support by taking an extra
step. Contact the personnel office to determine
if your employer is a Matching Gift Company.
Thanks for your
enthusiastic and
generous support!
Through life insurance. Gifts of life insurance can be made in one of
the following ways: designating West Virginia Wesleyan College as
the owner and beneficiary of an existing life insurance policy, buying
a new policy and designating West Virginia Wesleyan College as the
owner and beneficiary, or adding West Virginia Wesleyan College as a
charitable beneficiary to an existing policy.
Each of the various groups will include unique ways to showcase those who support the project. For more information
about the project, contact the Office of Advancement at 304-473-8600.
other while their respective wives, Rose and Anna,
quietly looked on! Their attempt to bridge the years
started in the Younger’s living room and continued
in a local restaurant. According to Rose Hatch they
provided “entertainment” for fellow lunch companions
as their loud reminiscing (due to age-related
hearing loss by both) could be heard clearly by all
other patrons. Blessed be the ties that bind especially
those that were forged so many years ago at WVWC!
Kirk Treible ’63 Response to President Balch’s Greetings to the 1963 Class
on their Induction into the Emeritus Club, October 12
It is an honor to be invited to make this response to
President Balch’s welcome. There are many among us
who have enjoyed a far more distinguished career than
I. Anything good that happened in my life moved from
New Jersey to Wesleyan and from here far beyond…
It was here that we learned from Dr. Glauner the secrets
of the American Civil War.
It was here that we learned the real meaning of the Gospels
from Dr. Ralph B. Brown.
It was here that we learned critical thinking skills from
Dr. Marvin Downey… and that was long before we were talking about critical thinking skills!
It was here that we learned about the natural world from Dr. Willis and Dr. Rossbach, Dr. Hallam and
Professor Klimer.
It was here that we learned the social graces from Miss Nelson and Dr. McBriar… how to behave at a tea
or a reception or how to handle the utensils at a dining table.
It was here that Madge Martin, RN shared the marvels of medicine from her little clinic in the back of
Agnes Howard Hall.
It was here that we learned that no small dreams stir the blood of men. The audacious bubble, created
under Dr. Martin’s direction, set the state for the Wesleyan that we see today… who would have guessed
that would have been accomplished?
It was here that we learned from Dr. Chrisman and Dr. Brill about dangling participles and split infinitives,
prepositions, articles, adverbs and verbs, nouns and pronouns… We learned the value of words in creating
a picture… We learned to use the English language gracefully and precisely.
It was here that Professor Norvel shared the drama of Shakespeare and how to make a good speech. How
I wish I had paid more attention.
It was here that we clarified the values set in the homes across America by parents such as ours. It was
here that we embraced a vista of core values that has guided us for the past half century.
So, we appeared, we studied, we learned, we played, and from here, we ventured to have big dreams and
discover that we could make a difference… we could change the world.
It was here that we were set free, but not adrift!
