Gospel Reflection
Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
“Counting Loaves”
Usually, Jesus does not have to repeat himself.
When he tells a cripple to get up and walk, or a blind man to
wash his eyes, they do so and are immediately cured. In
today’s gospel, however, the disciples do not drop everything
to start feeding the crowd. Instead of trusting Jesus,
they start counting loaves of bread. (Note that the crowd
does not hesitate to sit down when Jesus tells them to.)
After Jesus blesses the loaves and fish, the disciples finally
obey.
Like the disciples, I sometimes hesitate to follow
Jesus’ commands. Instead of trusting God completely, I
find myself “counting loaves.” I might not have enough
time to help the poor, or enough money to feed them. I
might not have the words to comfort the dying, or to encourage
someone who is depressed. I may be counting the
chores I have to do at home. (Or counting the episodes of
"Doctor Who” on my DVR that I haven’t watched yet.)
The excuses begin to sound lame when I list them.
So how do we get going? Maybe by listening to the first two
readings. Isaiah asks why we spend money on things that
won’t satisfy us. (Is 55:2) He tells us to heed the Lord’s
words if we want to truly live. What God is telling us
through Isaiah is that we wouldn’t be distracted by those
excuses if we paid more attention to God and how much He
loves us.
St. Paul says it even more forcefully. He reminds
us that nothing can separate us from God’s love, even
things like distress, persecution, famine, or even death
itself. These are more serious than any of my excuses.
The point is that Jesus rose from the dead to show how
much God loves us. Can’t I find time to spend with God
and experience that love? Can’t I see it in the eyes of those
who love me? Do I feel that love when God forgives my
sins? The more I experience God’s love for me, the more
likely I am to show that love to others, instead of just counting
loaves.

Stewardship—A Disciple’s Response
In today’s Gospel, Jesus feeds the five thousand with five
loaves and two fish. The message of stewardship is that God’s
gifts, shared, will always be more than enough.

From Our Pastor’s Desk
Jasper is sprucing up for the annual Strassenfest,
August 4th - 7th. We welcome all former
residents and guests who attend this annual home
coming. We will host Mass at 4:00 p.m. Saturday
evening with the traditional Polka music. Our school
along with Bosco Youth Ministry, will co-sponsor the
Wettlauf on Saturday morning. We will have 2 floats
in the parade on Sunday. One for our school and
the other for our Cardboard Boat Regatta, which will
be held the following weekend on Saturday, August
13th. We hope the school students and families will
participate in these fun activities. Holy Family will
again host the last formal activity of the Strassenfest
with the Celebration Singers performing in church at
7:00 p.m. on Sunday evening.
All the Pastors, Principals, and Teaching
Staff of the Catholic Schools in the Diocese will
participate in a back to school workshop this
Thursday at Holy Redeemer Church in Evansville.
Our new Bishop will celebrate the Mass and share
his vision for Catholic Schools. The first day of
school for Holy Family and Precious Blood will be
Thursday, August 11th.
This coming Wednesday, August 3rd at 7:00
p.m. will be an informational meeting about a trip to
China that is planned for October 12-26, 2012. We
will be Cruising the Yangtze River with an optional
2-Night Hong Kong Post Tour Extension. Anyone
interested should attend the meeting and pick up a
brochure in the parish office.

Do you feel separated from God and
alone in your struggles? Could a
Stephen Minister help you know God’s
love, His strength and His compassion?
Ask A Priest, Deacon, or DRE
I have seen people wearing rosaries as
necklaces. Is this okay or is this wrong?
It depends. Some religious orders wear a
rosary as part of their habit, usually hanging from
a belt. If the reason for wearing a rosary is a
statement of faith, as a reminder to pray it, or
some similar devotional reason - then it is okay -
the rosary is still being used reverently and
respectfully. However, a rosary is not just a
piece of jewelry. If a person wears a rosary
mockingly or treats it as just “another piece of
jewelry,” then proper reverence and respect are
not being shown. In some places in the United
States, it has even been used as a sign of belonging
to a gang - and this is not appropriate
reverence or respect.

• DIOCESAN YOUTH DAY-September 18th at the
Catholic Center in Evansville from 1 pm - 6:30 pm
(CST). This special day for High school youth is
back after a 10 year absence. The Diocesan Youth
Team has put in a lot of time and hard work to offer
this day of food, fun and fellowship for youth from all
over the Diocese. Bishop Thompson will offer Mass
at 5:30 p.m. More information to follow, but keep
your calendar open for this amazing day!

The Challenge: To design & create a floating vessel of
corrugated cardboard using engineering genius, artistic
flair or perhaps a combination of the two, with human
power that can compete in multiple races & finish with the

with building/ painting boats at workshops.

Shennong Stream, Reed Flute Caves, Terra-Cotta Warriors,
Wild Goose Pagoda, Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City, The
Great Wall, Peking Opera, and Rickshaw Tour. Learn more
about this trip on Wednesday, August 3rd where Lifestyle
Tours will give an overview at 7:00 p.m. in Fellowship Hall.

again and all chairpersons need to be contacting their
workers for the picnic. Workers Lists must be at the

Celebration Singers will be performing at Holy
Family Church for the Strassenfest Closing on
August 7th at 7:00 p.m. Make plans now to attend this
spiritual, uplifting show filled with Gospel type music.
Holy Family School is looking for an enthusiastic
individual interested in coaching the middle school
girls volleyball teams. If you are interested, or know
of someone who may be interested, please contact
Mr. Josh Budd, Athletic Director, at 482-4485.
Strassenfest Parade ~ Holy Family School will have a
float in the parade on August 7. If you would like to contribute
to this project, you may send or drop off your monetary
donation at the school office (Mon. ~ Thurs. 8-4). We will
be distributing SMARTIES candies during the parade, and
drop boxes for candy are in the Narthex and school office.

your children are interested in participating in the parade,

BE A BLESSING...The Haiti Committee’s Student
Sponsorship Program is now in the process of accepting
commitments to sponsor the beautiful children of
Dupity for the year of 2011-2012. As a new school
year approaches, it is easy to take the availability of
education for granted. The children of Dupity do not
have this luxury. Our support is the only way they
will receive the education necessary to better their
lives. If you feel God is calling you to support one of
