setup, and others. For older adults<br />
who are still quite active, the GFSC<br />
has a wide array of activities, volunteer<br />
opportunities, and trips. The Resource<br />
department of the GFSC connects<br />
older adults to services in the community<br />
which prolong the time these<br />
adults can remain in their homes.<br />
Parkwood Senior Living<br />
Parkwood Senior Living is a 172-unit<br />
senior living facility owned by Altru<br />
Health System and located on the<br />
Altru campus. Parkwood offers residents<br />
a variety of services from which<br />
to choose, including independent living<br />
private apartments, assisted living,<br />
basic care, and adult day services.<br />
Parkwood maintains 132 independent<br />
living/assisted living apartments and<br />
40 basic care studio apartments. Each<br />
service offers its own special touch to<br />
make life more enjoyable and provides<br />
residents the opportunity to renew<br />
old friendships and make new ones.<br />
Apartments feature a kitchenette and<br />
private bathroom.<br />
Parkwood’s assisted living, basic care,<br />
and adult day services are registered<br />
with the State of North Dakota. The<br />
assisted living program gives residents<br />
and their families the peace of mind<br />
of knowing that caring Parkwood staff<br />
are available 24 hours a day to provide<br />
security as well as supportive and preventive<br />
health care. Residents live in<br />
their own smoke-free apartment where<br />
their right to privacy, choice, dignity<br />
and individuality are emphasized.<br />
Music, Theater & Ballet<br />
The University of North Dakota’s music<br />
department and the Greater Grand<br />
Forks Symphony often host local and<br />
visiting musicians and offer a variety<br />
of musical events. There are choral<br />
groups, including a local Children’s<br />
Choir and Master Chorale; a steel<br />
drum band; wind ensembles; and a<br />
full symphony orchestra.<br />
The Alerus Center and the Ralph Engelstad<br />
Arena have both hosted many<br />
nationally known performers, including<br />
Tim McGraw, Brittany Spears, Sugarland<br />
and Carrie Underwood. Worldclass<br />
performances by musicians and<br />
theater groups can be found at the<br />
Chester Fritz Auditorium and the North<br />
Dakota Museum of Art.<br />
The Grand Forks area has a long<br />
history of public theater. The Firehall<br />
Theater, the Empire Arts Center and<br />
UND’s Burtness Theater all host a variety<br />
of performances every year. In East<br />
Grand Forks, the <strong>Community</strong> Performing<br />
Arts Center offers both school and<br />
community performances. Whether<br />
your preference is a musical, drama or<br />
comedy, you’ll find something to your<br />
taste right here in the Grand Cities. If<br />
you want to be a part of the fun, and<br />
not just watch, there are opportunities<br />
for all ages. From grade school<br />
through high school, area youth have<br />
the opportunity to participate in the<br />
Summer Performing Arts (SPA) program.<br />
An eight-week summer arts<br />
program, SPA produces a number of<br />
theatrical performances each year. For<br />
more experienced actors, the Firehall<br />
Theater holds a number of performances<br />
each year, with auditions open<br />
to anyone, while the Crimson Creek<br />
Collegiate Players offer young adults<br />
the opportunity to participate in a number<br />
of shows each summer.<br />
If dance is what you’re looking for,<br />
Grand Forks is home to the North<br />
Dakota Ballet Company, which offers<br />
performances as well as classes for<br />
all ages. Dance etc! has been providing<br />
Dance education for the Grand<br />
Forks community for 53 years. They<br />
offer classes in Jazz, Tap, Ballet, and<br />
hip hop. Dancers also perform at<br />
two yearly recitals, and many events<br />
throughout the community.<br />
Museums, Visual Arts & History<br />
The North Dakota Museum of Art is<br />
located on the campus of the University<br />
of North Dakota and attracts artists<br />
and visitors from across the country<br />
and around the globe. The museum<br />
also offers a summer art program for<br />
children, featuring painting, sculpture<br />
and other activities. The Hughes Fine<br />
Arts Center displays works of local and<br />
regional artists. Muddy Waters Clay<br />
Center is a non-profit community clay<br />
studio serving the Grand Forks area.<br />
They offer year-round, high-quality<br />
ceramic arts classes and activities for<br />
adults and children, gallery events,<br />
