Court Sports Opened in August 2004, the Betty Engelstad Center is the home to UND men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball. “The Betty” seats 4,000 and has some of the same amenities as “the Ralph.” There are four regulation-size basketball courts and four regulation-size volleyball courts. Behind the scenes, there are three team locker rooms, a players lounge, and a study area and classroom space. Gridiron Action Maybe football’s your favorite spectator sport. Grand Forks’ premier events center/convention facility, the Alerus Center, is home to UND football. In addition, the Alerus Center has the largest exhibit hall between Seattle and the Twin Cities. With seating of over 13,000 for football or soccer and up to 22,000 for entertainment events, it offers space for a variety of events. Besides the main arena, the Alerus Center also offers convention facilities for meetings of various sizes. Varsity and Community Sports The University of North Dakota features women’s and men’s hockey, basketball, world-class swimming and diving, and other varsity sports. With its beautiful facilities, UND is the place to root for the home team. UND also sponsors the Sioux Kids Club, an opportunity for grade school students to meet their favorite players and attend occasional games for free. Each year, various sports camps for area youth take place on the campus of UND. These include basketball, hockey, swimming, volleyball and football camps. UND staff provide instruction and position sessions, with an emphasis on small-group instruction and good sportsmanship. High School Sports Grand Forks and East Grand Forks public and private schools offer varsity sports, including football, hockey, volleyball, basketball, soccer, tennis, track, wrestling, golf, dance and gymnastics. No matter what time of year it is, fans of all ages can find a sporting event to cheer. Health Care Altru Health System Altru Health System is an integrated health system with headquarters on a 90-acre medical campus in Grand Forks. At Altru Health System, over 3,700 employees, 180 physicians, 65 nurse practitioners and physician assistants and 400 volunteers work as a team for the benefit of each patient. Altru’s facilities include a 262-bed acute care hospital, a 34-bed rehabilitation facility, a free-standing cancer center, and a 170-unit retirement living facility. Altru has long been committed to providing high-quality services and has had several “firsts” for North Dakota. Altru Health System was named first member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network. Altru Cancer Center is the first in the region to offer TomoTherapy HiArt, the most advanced radiation cancer treatment in the region. They were also the first oncology provider in the state to provide prostate seed implants, 3D Conformal Radiation Therapy and High-Dose Rate Brachytherapy. Altru’s Heart Services was the first in North Dakota to implement biventricular pacing and intravascular radiology, and was among the first providers in the region to offer implantable cardioverter defibrillators. Altru’s Diabetes Center was the first comprehensive, coordinated clinic for people with diabetes and their families in our region. Altru’s Diabetes Center is dedicated to a team approach in 14

treating diabetes and is committed to educating healthcare providers throughout the Upper Midwest. In addition to their specialties, Altru works closely with the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Mayo Clinic, and the North Central Cancer Treatment Group on several medical research projects each year. Doctors Hospital Scheduled to open early in 2012, Doctor’s Hospital will offer a full line of medical services in a 65 bed acute care hospital led by well seasoned healthcare professionals. Physicians Hospital System, the parent organization for Doctors Hospital, ranks at the top in measurable levels of satisfaction. Services that Doctors Hospital offer include: advanced obstetrics with the newest in luxury private labor and delivery rooms, twelve-bed intensive care unit, surgical suites for pre-op, post-op and out-patient, state of the art operating rooms, laboratory and radiology services, all private rooms on the medical surgical units as well as physical therapy, respiratory, and specialized orthopedic and spine services. Cancer Center of North Dakota The Cancer Center of North Dakota (CCND) is located next to Doctor’s Hospital on Aurora Medical Park in Grand Forks. CCND opened in 2005 and offers medical oncology and radiation oncology services as well as diagnostic services. CCND offers state of the art technology in radiation oncology with its Varian radiation treatment system. Their medical oncology treatment area is designed so patients may be treated and monitored in a warm and caring atmosphere. CCND offers oncology and hematology treatment services to the Grand Forks/East Grand Forks and regional areas. Other Services Although Altru Health System is the largest health provider in the communities, Grand Forks and East Grand Forks offer a wide variety of other health services.
