Recreation & Festivals Fishing Whether you’re looking to put your boat in the water or fish from the shore, opportunities abound in Grand Forks and East Grand Forks. Channel catfish are the Red River’s claim to fishing fame, but the Red River and the Red Lake River boast over 70 species of native fish. With four boat ramps within the two cities, it’s convenient to get your boat in the water. There are also plenty of shore fishing areas for those who want to keep their feet on dry ground. Boating Whether it’s trolling for fish on the Red River or just enjoying a day in a canoe or kayak, there are four boat ramps right along the Greenway: two in East Grand Forks, and two in Grand Forks. R alph E ngelstad A rena The world-class Ralph Engelstad Arena is described by many as the “finest facility of its kind in the world,” and is the home of the Fighting Sioux. The 400,000 square foot arena boasts granite floors, leather seats and the longest freestanding bars in North Dakota. Tours are available Monday through Friday at 1:30 PM. As part of the Red River State Recreation Area in East Grand Forks, a new campground offers 72 campsites, including 48 electric sites with full-hook-ups. Campers have plenty of access to multi-purpose trails for walking and biking, picnic areas, and two rivers for fishing and boating. The campground’s unique setting in an urban area offers visitors access to both outdoor recreational opportunities and shopping and dining facilities within walking distance. Festivals and Fairs Catfish Days Each year, people from all over the country come the beginning of August to “Cats Incredible” Catfish Days, a nationally known fishing tournament on the Red River. During the event, 250 anglers in 125 teams compete to earn cash prizes. Approximately 10,000 people attend this event, which provides two day festival with activities for the whole family along the banks of the river in East Grand Forks. Heritage Days In East Grand Forks, you’ll want to take in Heritage Village. This historic village works to preserve the history of the Northern Red River Valley. During Heritage Days, held the third week of every August, steam engine threshing machines, museum displays, demon- 12

strations and much more await your visit. Weekend tours are available. Facilities are available for class and family reunions. ArtFest Introduce your senses to 150+ artists, unique food vendors in 2 food courts, and 2 days of live performances at the Grand Cities Art Fest held in early June in downtown Grand Forks and East Grand Forks. Art Fest is a diverse gathering of artistic talent, food and entertainment that highlights our region’s unique culture. You can shop for fine art and homemade crafts, spark your kids’ imaginations with child-centered craft making, experience live, local music and see Town Square come alive as artists turn raw materials into original masterpieces at “Arts in Action” – all framed by the scenic banks of the Red River of the North. Grand Forks County Fair Each July, the Grand Forks County Fair and Exhibition is held at the fairgrounds in Grand Forks. The Grand Forks County Fair features 4-H exhibits, a livestock show, commercial exhibits, home arts exhibits and a carnival with concessions. Equipment Rentals Whether it’s summer or winter activities that have you excited about enjoying the outdoors in the area, there are a number of local businesses that provide rental equipment, from skates and skis for the winter to bikes and canoes for the summer. Organized Recreational Programming In addition to all the opportunities for recreation on your own, Grand Forks and East Grand Forks both offer numerous year-round youth and adult organized sports opportunities for all ages. University of North Dakota Envy of the Hockey World At over 400,000 square feet, Ralph Engelstad Arena features a suite level with 48 luxury suites and 2 mini suites. The ice level has state-of-the-art locker and training rooms for UND, with a huge weight-training area, players’ lounge and classroom/study area. The main concourse level has a lobby for ticket sales, administrative offices, the Sioux Shop and a spacious ‘traditions area’ featuring trophies, photos, and All-Americans. The arena seats just fewer than 12,000 and is typically at capacity for UND men’s hockey games. Wide, spacious concourses serve a variety of stadium food and treats and are complete with television monitors. Thanks to the private donation of Ralph Engelstad, the University of North Dakota has a facility that is truly the envy of all the NCAA and the world! In 2009, the Ralph opened a new full-service hockey training facility: The Hockey Academy at Ralph Engelstad Arena. The Hockey Academy staff consists of former UND and professional hockey players that facilitate training to area athletes of all ages and skill levels. Besides UND hockey, Ralph Engelstad Arena was instrumental in bringing the 2005 World Junior Hockey Championship to Grand Forks and has also played host to a number of events 13
