Regional Director Comments
Our Annual Meeting in October was one of best attended in many years. And
the meeting was also one of our most directed at expanding the work of our
Region. We owe our thanks to the Learning Project Team and Dr. Kathleen
Busick for constructing an outstanding program. Dr. Paul LeMahieu of the Carnegie
Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, our principle speaker, engaged
everyone in conversation about clarifying our outcomes, building a common
base for our programs and strengthening the programming options in our
Centers. More than 100 of you participated in three learning and discussion
sessions directed at that work.
Those who were there will remember Paul’s offer for the Region to become a partner in building educational resource
communities along with other educational partners of the Foundation. The details of this are still to be
worked out, but we have opened some new doors and strengthened our commitment to be about this work.
Maybe it’s just me, but I find it refreshing to spend our energies were we say our heart is – developing outstanding
educational programs. Sometimes it is easy to get lost in the detail of our organizational demands. Focusing on the
heart of our work can only enhance our learning programs and strengthen our Centers.
Thanks to all of you for your assistance for the Learning Project Team and for your willingness to engage this work.
The next two years should be most exciting as we expand and begin to implement our new initiatives.
Blessings. John.
From Earl Cooper
Sue Hanson makes my life mighty good. In that statement rests a philosophy not just profound, but so scrumptious that
it screams to be passed on. Sue is the Management Support Representative in the Department of Spiritual Care &
Patient Advocacy at Yuma Regional Medical Center.
Before I agreed to become chair of the Accreditation Committee for the ACPE Pacific Region, I sought not only the
approval of my institution, but also the support of our Department of Spiritual Care and Patient Advocacy. In its infancy,
my job as chair of accreditation was one of keeping up with names, places and dates. However, as with most
jobs in leadership, the position morphed into an entity all its own. No surprise there.
Since I was taking on the position of Chair in addition to my supervision duties, organization of my time and focus of
my efforts became critical. That’s when the astounding piece that I am writing about began to take root. I am speaking
of “growing” a partner in purpose without whose skill and astuteness my job would have been less effective and certainly
less personable. More than just handling details, Sue – and perhaps other talented folks like her in our region –
became a major force in accreditation. I’m referencing here to a unique kind of support that is not just skilled, but
intuitive with the “face” of approachability.
When an assistant like Sue makes connections and takes the initiative, the person wearing the leadership hat benefits.
And although I profess to believe there are others among us who function in the same capacity, I secretly believe that it
is extremely rare. I found that, after the initial phases of my position were defined, Sue flourished in her contact with
people in various Centers. At that point, she and I established reference levels so that if I was with students in seminar
or on a site consultation, Sue became the consistent contact for information and support. We worked as a unit. Her
consistency helped me with continuity, her willingness to consult with me lead to effectiveness.
I leave the position - having given it six years of intensity, frustration, extensive travel and fragmentation of my “other”
life roles – realizing the validity of the working arrangement Sue and I developed over that six-year period. Like the
header and healer in team roping, we crystallized an understanding of the other’s role. You get no time unless the
heeler catches. Or maybe we’ve been like square dancers: when you’re going to do the “dosey-do,” there is no question
of the hand you’ll hold out.
In any case, we as an organization are remiss if we hold onto the idea that one voice or one cell phone must have a
death grip on day-to-day operations. Our world is complex, often too seriously “bent” on self-service and absolutely
lacking a sense of humor. We need the exponential voice, the ability to stay connected and focused without being
strangled by the cords that bind us.
So I feel immensely grateful to Sue – and I also tip my hat to the concept of shared responsibility. Sue Hanson has
taught me humility and appreciation and has made me believe that I’ve been more fortunate than most of my colleagues
in learning how to let someone else hold the reins when the horse is moving forward. It works!

NEFSIS — Regional Videoconferencing System
The people working with the Learning Project secured for the Region a videoconferencing
system called Nefsis. This is a secure service that allows real time private conversations
and programming. Up to 100 people can be at a meeting at one time. The service is purchased
by the Region for use by all our members. So, it’s FREE to you.
The service may be used for interviewing students, group sessions, SES and Supervisor
consultations, individual and group supervision, didactic presentations, committee meetings
and more.
Currently the Regional system is being used for:
committee meetings,
SES consultation group open to everyone,
admissions interviews,
peer group sessions for remote CPE sites,
didactic presentations and
individual supervision.
Should you want more information about usage, please contact Ray Mitchell at Yuma
