A lake in the woods
Baden Railway Station – former Oberstadt
Railway Station – Tüfels Chäller – Rüsler –
Heitersberg – Lake Egelsee – Widen
From Baden Railway Station, the route follows Badstrasse,
Stadtturm (city tower) and Mittlere Gasse to
Cordulaplatz. The ‘Glas’ pedestrian underpass takes
you to Mellingerstrasse and Hotel Linde, where you
can cross the street. Left of the library, the route
starts to climb and passes over the walkway of the
KV Baden-Zurzach Business School. From there,
follow the ‘Heitersberg’ sign. The route continues
through the Tüfels Chäller to Rüsler and up the Höhenweg
(high route) to Heitersberg. Open stretches
in the woods offer numerous gorgeous views over
the Limmat and Reuss Valleys.
Places of interest:
The Tüfels Chäller and Lake Egelsee share the same
geographic history. The forested area of the Tüfels
Chäller (see p. 42) with its own primeval forest
character and mighty rock formations was placed
under conservation protection in 1987. After the
retreat of the Riss Glacier 100,000 years ago, a
sinkhole was formed on the east face of the Baregg,
and interlinked chunks of stone up to 30 m high
gradually slid on the wet molasse marl towards the
valley. This type of landslide created a large depression,
which provided a place for Lake Egelsee to
form. It is possible to bathe in Lake Egelsee. Myths
and legends surround the Tüfels Chäller (devil’s
cellar) and Lake Egelsee. The devil is said to have
stored his casks in the gorges of the Tüfels Chäller,
and legend has it that a sunken castle of an evil
knight lies at the bottom of deep Lake Egelsee.

Public transport:
The route can be shortened depending on how
keen you are on hiking. For example, you can
travel back to Baden from Oberrohrdorf or from
the Remetschwil "Post" bus stop. If you want to
hike the entire route, board the bus in Berikon. Bus
number 320 or 321 will always take you back to
Baden.
