Baden Railway Station – Landvogteischloss –

Baden Railway Station
From Baden Railway Station, take the Promenade
lift down to the River Limmat and continue upriver
to the Landvogteischloss (Bailiff’s Castle). The first
steep incline, with an altitude difference of 110 metres,
leads to the Restaurant Schloss Schartenfels.
After a descent of 132 metres to Ennetbaden and
a climb of 107 metres, you will pass through the
vineyards, known as the “Golden Wall”, and reach
the Hertenstein-Chänzeli lookout point. One hundred
metres below you lies the spa area, which you pass
through before the path climbs again behind the
Nordportal (north portal) to the Martinsberg-Chänzeli.
After another descent of 63 metres, you will reach
the Stein ruins (see p. 4). From there, the path down
to the railway station is only 44 metres.

The Chänzeli, or lookout points, have been in existence
for more than one hundred years and were
a vital part of the therapy programme of Baden’s
baths during the ‘belle époque.’ These supplements
to bathing cures were known as ‘terrain cures.’ It
is worth climbing the approximately 1,300 steps
because of the lovely view you will be rewarded
with at the summit. It will also give you a completely
different perspective of the city of Baden and its
surrounding region.
