February 2012
Mummification at RMS
Mrs. Combs' and Mrs. Stuthard's 6th grade
social studies classes are studying the culture
of the ancient Egyptians. In order to learn
more about the process of mummification, the
students mummified apples. The activity
included weighing and measuring the apple
before mummification. The apples were then
placed into plastic bag containing a solution
that is similar to the natron used by the
ancient Egyptians. After a couple weeks, the
students will remove their apple mummies,
and get their weights and measurements
again. The students are also making a
sarcophagus in which to place their apple
mummy. Students chose items to place inside
the sarcophagus that their apple may need in
the "afterlife".
“Changing Nation”
Mrs. Cancelliere's, Mr. McKnight's, and Mrs.
Stuthard's 8th grade social studies classes
just finished their "Changing Nation" projects.
Groups of students made a presentation on a
tri-board that covered one of the following
American History topics from 1810 - 1860:
Andrew Jackson, Trail of Tears and Trails of
Hope, Texas Revolution, Mexican-American
War, California Gold Rush, Immigration,
American Literature and Art, Reforming
Society, and Women's Rights. After the
boards were complete, each group traveled
from board to board and gathered information
about each topic. All the groups evaluated the
other boards within their class, and then they
had to do a self-evaluation of their own board.
Super Spellers!
The crowd was in awe of the spelling words over 50 Summit County students were charged with
reciting in front an auditorium full of spectators! But, the bright lights, formalities, and phenomenal
words did not shake our kids! Three made it into the final several rounds and have advanced to
the Regional Spelling Bee on March 10 th !
Our students advancing to the Regional Competition are:
Russell Ahsan, Natalie Allen, and Asha Ravichandran

Cheerleading
The RMS 8th Grade Cheerleading Squad
traveled to Ashland High School on Sunday,
February 19, 2012. They participated in the
Ashland Cheerleading Competition. They
placed fourth in a very competitive Middle
School Division. The Middle School Division
had the most entrants and many talented
teams. It proved to be the most difficult
competition to date for this squad, with
only 9.5 points separating the first through the
fourth places. The girls performed at their
highest level and achieved a team goal of
scoring their best score in a competition ever!
Wrestling Wrap-up
During the Winter Sports Awards Night several
of our more experienced wrestlers were
recognized for their accomplishments during
this past season and for their middle school
careers. With 48 victories each in the past two
years, Paul Molke and Joe Gabel were named
Co-MVP's. Thomas Baker,one of our first-year
wrestlers, was named our "Rookie of the
Year" and "Most Improved" was given to Jacob
Peterson. Spencer Haught and Quintin
Vosper received "Coaches Awards" for their
contributions to the wrestling program the past
two years. Overall, the Revere Middle School
wrestling team finished the 2011-2012 season
with a 6-14 record in dual meets. One of the
more exciting victories of the year happened at
a home meet against Wadsworth. Our young
and very inexperienced wrestlers prevailed by
a score of 48-33. This year's team consisted of
26 student-athletes this year; 8 eighth-graders
and 18 seventh-graders. With 15 first-year
wrestlers on the squad, and with most of
them seventh-graders, we are already looking
forward to next year !!!
