A Monumental Change
for FSU Panama City
Dr. Ken Shaw, Dean
FSU Panama City
A monumental and
historic change in
the life of FSU Panama
City was approved
by the FSU
Board of Trustees
on June 8, 2012.
Through approval
of a new academic
plan for FSU Panama
City, we will
admit freshman students for the first time
in the history of our campus beginning fall
2013. With more than 9,000 students being
denied admission to FSU Tallahassee each
year, we are excited that this new initiative
will provide more students an opportunity to
start and complete their Florida State University
degrees at FSU Panama City.
This change will have significant benefits to
our local community and all of Northwest
Florida. As students come from around the
state and from out of state to spend four years
in Panama City working on one of our 14 high
demand, career track, undergraduate degree
programs, they will have multiple opportunities
to intern in our local businesses and industries,
with the hope that they will decided
to live and work in Northwest Florida. Our
campus has a 30-year record of supporting
our region with qualified individuals.
Sixty percent of our alumni live and work
in Bay County and three-quarters of all of
our alumni make their home in Northwest
Florida. Seventy-five percent of our electrical
engineering graduates work in Bay
County and 94% of our civil engineering
graduates work in Northwest Florida. FSU
Panama City is dedicated to helping all of
our businesses and industries to be successful
by having the best qualified individuals
from which to choose.
Florida State University has been ranked
again in the top 50 public universities in the
country by US News and World Report. We
have also been ranked #14 by Forbes as the
Top 100 Best Buy Colleges for 2012. Both
of these rankings take into consideration the
quality degree programs as well as the cost
to obtain that education. FSU Panama City
offers these same high quality programs at a
great tuition value. Every student who graduates
from FSU Panama City will know that
their degree is recognized nationally.
Adding freshman over the next four years
will increase our student population from
around 1300 students to over 2000 students
by 2016. With this student body, our campus
will continue to be a viable and valuable
economic driver for this region. As
the campus grows, we are committed to
continuing to work closely with Gulf Coast
State College and our neighboring state colleges
to provide opportunities for their AA
graduates who choose to transfer to FSU
Panama City to complete their undergraduate
degrees. The caliber of the transfer students
we have received from these colleges
have always been strong.
As FSU Panama City makes the transition
to a four-year campus, we look forward to
working closely with our community and
regional stakeholders. We will continue
to provide the best quality educational opportunities
for our students to ensure they
are well prepared to move into the workforce
and make an important contribution
in helping businesses and industries grow in
Northwest Florida.
