Another addition is the two-day Newton
National Running Clinic and Symposium
coming up in a few weeks. “It will include
education on running form, along with a
gate form analysis and information on running
shoes,” Mr. Pagenkopf. “The instructors
are coming from Boulder, Colo. It was the
new command chief’s initiative after he attended
the clinic elsewhere. We are probably
the fourth or fifth base to host it.” They will
be accompanied by Dr. Mark Cucuzzella, a
two-time Air Force Marathon winner, who
is working with the Air Force to standardize
running instruction.
Although, the HAWC has a slew of misconceptions,
its main focus is to help. “We don’t
want the stigma that if you fail your pt test
you now have to go to the HAWC,” said Mr.
Pagenkopf. “We not only help people that are
struggling, we are also here for those who
want to enhance their performance.”
Department of the Navy
Awards Panama City Warfare
Center for Safety
Two teams of engineers from the Naval
Surface Warfare Center Panama City
Division were among 19 commands
and installations to receive the 2012 Department
of the Navy Safety Excellence Award on
July 11, at the U.S. Navy Memorial and Naval
Heritage Center in Washington D.C.
The Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama
City Division, a field activity for the Naval
Sea Systems Command, was recognized for
two distinct award categories: Safety Integration
in Acquisition, and for the Emerging
Center of Excellence.
NAVSEA program manager for SWCS
Capt. Thomas Gajewski commended the
team for their significant contributions to
the SWCS team, while developing rigorous
systems safety specifications for the new
system that will benefit every Navy SEAL
who will eventually deploy in the next-generation
SDV.
“NSWC PCD has a longstanding history
of designing, documenting, manufacturing,
testing, fielding and sustaining the SDV,”
Gajewski said. “Given the SWCS team’s expertise
and their collaborative efforts to date,
their newly-developed safety specifications
will establish a margin of safety for the nextgeneration
SDV exceeding its current record
of excellence.”
NSWC PCD Commanding Officer Capt.
Scott Pratt said the SWCS team’s dedication
in developing a safe operating environment
for Navy SEALs is well established.
Turning attention to the second category,
Pratt said the Emerging Center of Excellence
category was awarded to Dr. Thomas
P. English, theater systems safety manager,
of NSWC PCD Test Engineering Branch.
“Dr. English was distinguished for deploying
to HQ United States Forces - Afghanistan
(USFOR-A) working in the Safety Directorate
to define innovative In-Theater systems safety
processes, conduct in-theater accident investigations,
and facilitate risk mitigation efforts
for safely operating mine-resistant ambush
protected-vehicles (MRAPs),” Pratt said.
“Dr. English has an extensive background
in applying a forensic approach to analyzing
systems safety while incorporating traditional
systems engineering principles,” said
Dr. Kerry Commander, NSWC PCD acting
technical director. “His methodology tends
to yield a broad spectrum of potential solutions
based on factual findings. By having
combined NSWC PCD’s Systems Safety
engineers in the traditionally structured US-
FOR-A Safety Directorate, this empowered
our forward deployed forces to take safety to
higher levels of proficiency.”
